Picture a 47-8-9 Business Coupe from the side. I remember the comment and it probably was in 47 or so.

The multi-piece wrap around rear window on the coupes made some people think of a windshield. I recently heard a rebroadcast of a Jack Benny radio show from the fall of 1947 in which the question of whether a new Stude was coming or going was a running joke. So the story was obviously commonly understood. And BTW, the show was sponsored by Lucky Strike, not Studebaker.

I think I've read somwhere where this joke was started by some BrandX competitor. Since the Big 3 were all fielding more or less facelifted prewar designs, they figured if they could make a joke out of the first new postwar car, they'd dampen the obvious advantage.[}] After all - who wanted to be seen driving a joke?[:0][)]

Brings back memories of when I first saw a 1947 five passenger coupe (they weren't Starlights then) parked at the curb in 1946. It certainly stopped foot traffic.

In regards to the coming or going thing. I remember years ago following a 52 Starlight though the hills and at certain distances, especially if the car was climbing a slight rise, it looked as though I was looking at the front of a car. I never got that effect if the car was very close.
