  • Studebakers Racing at Riverview Speedway in Thunder Bay Ontario in the '60's

Last night at Pier 4 in Hamilton, we met a man who showed us some pictures of Studebakers racing at Riverview Speedway in Thunday Bay Ontario. He sent them to us today and here they are. What a blast from the past!!!
    1. The #12 car was owner and driven by Trev Wheeler.
    2. These pictures were taken at Riverview in 1969
    3. The # 1 car was owned and driven by Tom Nesbitt.
    4. The older and "more abused" car was his first Studebaker and was run in
      1968.
    5. The second car with the black vinyl roof was run in 1969.
    6. The picture where Tom is standing beside the car was taken in Superior
      Wisconsin in 1969.
    7. These were all taken by a friend of mine, Brian Skedgel, from Thunder Bay.
    8. Pictures courtesy Ken Kelly, Hamilton On.

Stock car racers sure messed up a lot of collectable cars back in the day. If it wasn't racing them it was tearing them up at the destruction derby.

Halfway Motors, which is shown as the sponsor, was a Studebaker dealer who did a great job for us in the Lakehead. Halfway's premises was located exactly half way between what was then known as Fort William and Port Arthur. The two cities merged to become Thunder Bay. The last time I was in Thunder Bay which was about 10 years ago, Halfway Motors was still in business as a Nissan dealer if my recollection is correct.

Thanks for the picture. We had Studies racing at our local speedway called Speedway Park, but so far, I cannot find any pictures of them. My hubby says that they were mid '50's cars.

I hope Florida member Bob Coolidge sees these posts. Bob is pretty much our resident historian on Studebakers in the racing world.

The #66 car looks to have a Big block Chevrolet engine

When I was growing up in the mid 50's we had two(2) v8 studies to race on our dirt track at Vidalia, Ga.. One was a Taxi service(Stude fleet) from Swainsboro Ga. and the other was an entry by the local Stude dealer(Gillis Mtrs.).. Both cars were late 30's coupes with Studebaker V8's and were problematic for one reason or another.. Lots of odd combinations were racing i.e. GMC powered 37 Chevy.. The winner? a 37 furd tudoor sedan with 2 carbs and more.. tch..tch..

Stu: Thank you. I have heard of Studebakers racing at Thunder Bay previously. There was some reference to this in another forum a few years back. One of the comments posted referenced Chevrolet power. That became common once Studebaker used the GM engine in place of their own.

I love the paint scheme on the Red - black - white car. Would be an eye-catcher on a modern-day Resto-rod.
No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

In 1959-1961, I helped a friend build a stock car out of a 1956 Golden Hawk. He raced it at the Arlington, NY track.

Most likely, the owner/driver loved his Corvettes on the street.
