  • Tell me about fins

Are the fins on Studebakers an actual part of the fenders?
Or are they screwed or riveted or welded on?
One fellow said that he had "plastic" ones on his 62?
Is there someone out there who sells fins?

      Chris,
Do you know if there is a place or person who sells them?

Most Hawks are all steel; '57 to '61, and there is little need for them, the wider Fiberglass '56 GH type are rarer yet, but neither are available.

And yes they are screwed on under the Mouldings.

If you added them to a GT Hawk you would ruin the Continental Fender Top full length Moulding thing that is part of the style of the Roof design. You might as well cut the Top off and just build a '57 GH or buy one, if that is your desire.

Need someone to verify this. Isn't there a difference between 57-58 Golden hawk fins and silver hawk fins? I know the stainless trim is different, but I think there is a difference at the front.

You wanna do a poll on that one Bob? My guess is 95% of us would prefer to leave a GT Hawk as is.

I get a kick out of people at shows asking if my 55 is a "Golden Hawk". They seem to associate that with Studebakers ...like they are hard-wired. I tell them it was the last year before they stuck fins on 'em and called 'em a Hawk. Then they took the fins back off in 62 and called 'em a GT Hawk. Most wouldn't realize they were all the same basic car unless they saw them all at once. The "Hawk" poster would be a handy tool, but I don't want to wear my copy out (lol).

Sure Rich go ahead and do the poll, still only an opinion.

I have nos fins. I bought a huge collection of parts about 12 years ago and it came with 15 to 20 fins of various sizes. How much do they sell for?

So, are 57-61 Silver hawk coupe and Hawk coupe all the same, for just the metal fender itself?
I think a solid rust free fin should be worth at least $100 a piece. Probably more. NOS ? Swap meet leftovers, I have found for $40 a pair.
