From what I can see in Paul's photo, that air cleaner is the correct one for an R3 Lark type. Also, while the body diameters are the same, the outlet opening sizes are different between the Lark and Hawk air cleaners.R2Andrea

It wouldn't be for the R3 type either, because all R3 engines had a breather cap on the oil pan breather tube, not the hose like R1 and R2 engines. This made for five oil filler caps on those engines! There shouldn't be a breather tube nipple on the air filter.Originally posted by R2Andy View PostFrom what I can see in Paul's photo, that air cleaner is the correct one for an R3 Lark type. I can't blow the air cleaner up enough to get a better look at it, but, it does look like the correct factory Lark type unit. The correct one is an inline unit. The body is a cylinder with seperate identical ends with an opening to attach the hoses to. There are two versions, the 48 state version and a version for California and New York State which required sealed PCV systems. The sealed systems also had sealed breather caps. There are also 2 versions of all the other '64 air cleaners, including the R3 Avanti.R2Andrea

Yes, you are missing that it does not have the side box opening, OR the near end bracket to mount it to the core support. It may have been used on Larks or Hawks, but I have never heard of them using a remote or different filter. Perhaps it's one for a Lark type where they removed a headlight for ram air?Originally posted by WCP View PostI don't see any breather tube nipple on Paul's missing air cleaner. It also appears to have the closed top with rubber flap, as per the Avanti R3's unit. Am I missing something in that picture?
Definately NOT an Avanti R3 air cleaner though......Yes that is a REAL R3 pictured that I restored Engine # B61Last edited by bezhawk; 07-25-2014, 08:31 PM.Bez Auto Alchemy

Bezhawk, I assumed that the rectangular opening could be pointing down between the pallet slats. I do see something at the 7 o'clock position that appears to be a stud or fastener. It's hard to make out, even though I do have a larger picture. BTW, I also did restoration work on a real R3, B46. Unfortunately, the pictures that I took (pre-digital) didn't include the Avanti air cleaner.

As far as original R3 type air cleaner housings are concerned.....although it would be nice to find the real deal, from what I see here any of these configurations of Avanti /Lark /Hawk housings could be transformed into another with a bit of spare sheetmetal, strap steel,...... and an hour or so in front of the tig welder. (And then possibly a trip to the chrome platers!)

And I'll probably end up doing just that. It never hurts to ask.Originally posted by SN-60 View PostAs far as original R3 type air cleaner housings are concerned.....although it would be nice to find the real deal, from what I see here any of these configurations of Avanti /Lark /Hawk housings could be transformed into another with a bit of spare sheetmetal, strap steel,...... and an hour or so in front of the tig welder. Thank you!Originally posted by packardHawk58 View Post61 Lark, look at my posting nine back and you can see a R2 Hawk air cleaner on the left, it doesn't have the L bracket welded to it. That looks like an Avanti to me because the breather pipe face's the opposite direction to the Lark style.
