  • 240 MPH "Stupidbaker" salt flat racer this week on PowerNation

Got an email from Powerblock TV today about this:

This weekend Courtney features a gorgeous salt flat racer called "Stupidbaker". Builder Alan Johnson will join the PowerNation to talk about how they built it using CAD drawings before one screw was ever turned. It's a 1953 Studebaker that's been engineered to go fast!

Owners Paul and Betty Gilliam handed the build over to Johnson's Hot Rod shop in Gadsden, AL. Once the car was designed aerodynamically first, then they fitted and placed everything underneath the shell for speed. It features a ton of ARP fasteners that not only hold up to the high speed, but the salty conditions of the salt flats of Bonneville too. It has a Keith Dorton designed 368 SB-2 that makes 945 horsepower at 9000 RPM's.

In practice they've already clocked 228 MPH with an exit speed of 240 MPH; and Keith is still taking it easy on the engine, so there is a lot more speed to come! The goal is to be the fastest naturally aspirated car to run over 300 MPH. Find out where the name "Stupidbaker" came from this week on PowerNation.

    Interesting.

There's another "Stupidbaker" only it's a 50/51, gunmetal grey. I saw it with 33" tall drag slicks and drag front tires. I was also told by someone in Studeland that it was built for the salt...it coulda been...!? Don't know, never saw the owner.

Yeah, well.... as I say, "Anyone can buy new hi-po parts and probably go fast--if persistent; but, can they do 225mph with a 299c.i. Studebaker V/8? (It takes real idiots to run a decades-orphaned antique on the Salt.)"

DEEPNHOCK... which part of my post is "fightin' words?" BOTH have already been done, the former many, many times, the latter once--talk with Mr. J. Lange of Effingham, IL (Bonneville, August 2009) about it. ...and, I stand fully behind my parenthetical phrase since I have been intimately involved in doing so for over a quarter century.
