  • Curtis Turner raced a Lark

Last week I bought two diecast racing Fords of Curtis Turner and Joe Weatherly. I have been fans of both of them since the late forties. I intend to put them in a shadow box frame, and I was looking for some pictures to go with them. I found a great picture of the two of them racing nos. 26 and 12 in 1956 on the old Daytona beach course. While reading about Turner, I was surprised to learn that he had once raced a Studebaker Lark. Here is the link.

Curtis Turner should be in the NASCAR Hall o Fame, but it will never happen because he was a thorn in Bill France's side.

Smokey Yunick, in his book, agrees with you on "He should be and why he's not".

      Right on, Bob & Sam.

If you like Curtis Turner (and I do, too!), you can't do better than to read Robert Edelstein's book, Full Throttle: The Life and Fast Times of NASCAR Legend Curtis Turner.

It was published in 2005 and is an excellent read on the toipic. BP

It is alleged that Curtis Turner could cut a 180 in the middle of a two-lane bridge in a ton-and-a half rack truck and never spill a drop.

I believe this picture is from the Compact sedan race at Sebring. There were three Larks as I recall. Fireball Roberts drove one. I don't remember who drove the third one. Holman Moody prepared the Larks.

Any relation to Seattle native and West Coast midget legend "Cactus Jack" Turner? He also competed in the Indy 500 for years.

Chauncey ("Jocko") Maggiacomo drove the third Lark when they raced at Lime Rock Park (Connecticut). I don't remember if he also raced at Sebring.
