Studebaker's 1963 Closing: "Top 9" list after all

Well, lo and behold; Studebaker's 1963 closing did make at least one list of Top News Stories in Indiana in 1963; The Indianapolis Star editorial cartoonist's list as old man 1963 is [thankfully] ushered out by "Hoosiers," per this cartoon:



(In my earlier report of the December 27, 1963 Indianapolis News list of Top Ten Indiana News stories, as polled by newspaper writers, I had commented that Studebaker's Closing hadn't make a Top Ten List.)

I had read something about the Coliseum tragedy in Indy not long before Studebaker's closing--it was totally tragic, wasn't it?

A Cleveland radio show had an author on a few months back talking about all the historic things that happened in '63 besides the assassination, and I emailed the show's host and mentioned Studebaker closing. He's an old-car guy and he did mention my email!

The Indiana State Fairgrounds Coliseum Explosion took place on Halloween Night 1963, so it was about seven weeks before Studebaker ceased South Bend production.

Because it was Halloween Night and happened right near the end of The Holiday on Ice Show, some people initially thought the explosion was some kind of a Grande Finale to the show. It became all too obvious all too soon that it was actually a man-made disaster of monumental proportions.

This past Halloween Night (2013) was the 50th Anniversary of the explosion, so the local press had many articles about the tragedy. There were a lot of children in the audience and, of course, they are now adults in their 50s and 60s. Many have terrible memories of seeing parents and grandparents killed in the explosion.

I was a Senior in High School at the time and we lived maybe five miles from The Indiana State Fairgrounds. But you could hear the sirens all night long, and Indianapolis did not go to sleep that Halloween Night. BP
