  • I like street rodders

The 59 rod truck I bought from Gary did not make reserve on ebay, but sold to a rodder today on a second chance offer. Actually, a older friend of a rodder that came down with a flatbed and and a check. A quick walk around, a short driver, and money changed hands and on the trailer it went. As I pointed out small defects, the rodder said stuff like "Hell. it's 50 years old", "That's a easy fix" and "all the hard stuff has been done" Nice to sell a Studebaker to someone that knows not only how to fix a car/truck. but how to build one. The new owner is 77 years old, and it's his first rod, but his younger rodder friend will take good care of the truck for him. BTW, he was very impressed with the work done on Gary's truck, and like Gary and me, wondered why it did not sell for more money.

    Hi, JDP,

Beauty is in the eye of the guy who will pay money for one. IMHO, the '57-59 trucks have a grille not even a mother could love. For me, it ruins the great Bourke lines. I owned a '59 for several years and it was ugly to the day I sold it. On the other hand, I replaced it with a '55 and it is still the best-looking truck Studebaker ever built. Just depends on how you look at it.

    thnx, jv.

1955, best looking truck Studebaker ever made?? I would suggest it is in the eye of the beholder. Some people do not realize it but Studebaker did actually build some trucks before WWII.

I have always thought the 55 was the best looking of the post war Studebaker trucks, also, but that 38 Coupe Express and maybe all the Coupe Express trucks are much better looking IMO.

From being a straight car guy in my youth, I've grown to like trucks quite a bit. While I think the '55 was the best looking, I like the M-series trucks too. As for the '57-'59, I think they lend themselves to being creative. There are a lot of ways to mount lights with that grill. I always though a set of '63 Pontiac Grand Prix park lights mounted between the gills would look great.

Like everything else everyone has an opinion. I like all of the Studebaker trucks for different reasons. Although I will admit that at one time I did not care for the ones with the fiberglass grille, all it really took to change my mind was seeing a nice one in a color I liked.
As for the pre M-series coupe express models they are in a class by themselves. They have beds, but can you really call them trucks? They are too pretty to haul anything in. The Coupe Express is a great example of Art Deco on wheels.
