  • Bonnie Doon in SB closing Ice Cream plant

If you have been to SB for the International Meets you may have stopped at a Bonnie Dune drive in. There are a lot less of them than there used to be but there are at least 3 or 4 left. They were a South Bend/MIshawaka/Elkhart institution back in the 50s and 60s. Well it looks like they are closing their remaining Ice Cream plant. However, they may be contracting out their ice cream so they will still be around, hopefully for the next International.

We moved to Buchanan in 1965. Had a very tight budget and the four of us loved to go to Bonnie Doon on old US 31 for a treat. Great food and fine service. Hope the remaining store can keep going on some basis.

Have a nice little classic car gathering every Sunday during the summer that was attended by quite a few Stude drivers. Hope they can keep it up.

Sad news! I spent a lot of time and $ at BD's South Michighan street store. The ice cream plant lasted almost 50 years after the aniv. of the Studebaker plant closing which is comming up this December.

According to the owner/operator, the drive-in location on Lincoln way will remain open. Both the Lincoln way restaurant and the 4th street location as well as any stores selling it were getting their ice cream from somewhere in Elkhart, which I believe is the main place that is closing. I would venture to guess that the only changes being made is that ice cream production will be farmed out.
The location on Michigan St. in South Bend has been closed for as long as I've been alive.
