    Bud,
If you weren't 3000 miles away!
I will have four complete brake assemblies available at Reedsville, PA in two weeks; from a '51 Commander that would just bolt on and give him better stopping power--from backing plates to bearings!
If you know anyone making the trip, 1-1/2 C-notes brings them home.Click image for larger version

Greetings! I know this is an antique thread but I'm getting desperate here. I rescued at 1951 Champion 2-door sedan from certain destruction. Got it running pretty well, moves under its own power, has no brakes whatsoever. Got the hydraulics fixed. However, the drums are completely destroyed by years of gouging. I'd really like to keep the correct brakes on it but I cannot find drums ANYWHERE -- and I need all four. Any thoughts on how to solve this issue? I'd like to give this car to a young person to get them started in the hobby -- and on Studebakers in specific but I am unwilling to give a youngster a car without perfectly working brakes. Thanks for any consideration that y'all can give to this matter.

Have you checked with Studebaker International (Hope, Indiana) or Stephen Allen's Studebaker (Florida)? They are currently advertising new brake drums for various models from 1939 through 1964.

        Greetings Mr. 2R5!

I'm following up on your offer that you have four drums from your 1951 Commander that you converted to Turner discs. I think that only the rear drums from a '51 Commander will work on the front and rear of the '51 Champion (P/N 529224). Is this your understanding also? If so, I would be interested in buying your rear drums.

The above being said, I think the brakes from the backing plates out from the Commander (front and rear) will bolt onto the '51 Champion. In that case, I would be interested in buying your full assemblies as long as the drums are useable.

        Your thoughts?

        Greetings Mark L.!

Yes, I checked with all of the usual suspects. They're just not in production and there are no plans to produce them due to the front end and batch run costs. Now I understand better why folks are converting to Turner brakes -- they don't have a choice if they want to drive their cars! I have contacted the museum to see if they have technical drawings. No response yet. Not entirely sure what I would do with the blue prints except to see if maybe there's something already in production that could be used.

Thanks, gentlemen, for offering your insights.

You guys will be able to find what you need. These parts are always turning up as cars are parted out or brakes are "upgraded." It just takes a little patience making the connection. The five lug drums were used from 1951-53 on all Champions, four lug from 1947-50.

1947 and early 1948 Champion front drums are not interchangeable with late 1948 to 1950 drums. The latter have a much larger centre hole in the hub.

I also have a disc kit for the 4 lug patterns!

Of course the '51 Commander Brakes will fit a '51 Champion, AND be much better.
A '51 to a '51 would mean nothing would be different that they mount to.

That is Two needing them, and THREE Offers !

I took the brakes off a 1959 V8 lark and bolted them on a 1952 Champion.

The Best option, Drum Brakes do not get ANY better than the '54 to '66 Studebaker V8 Drum Brakes.
