  • Neutral safety switch question

I have been trying without success to locate the neutral safety switch for my '55 coupe. The issue is that my car has power steering. The non-power steering switch is readily available. I have tried the TW advertisers and have been disappointed by their apparent lack of interest in helping to find this switch. The part number I have which was verified by Studebakers West is #534390. What I'm wondering is what is the difference? Is it a different mounting bracket to accommodate the spacing for the power steering unit? I can't imagine that the shifter itself is any different, but who knows? Any thoughts, including leads on finding the correct switch, will be greatly appreciated.

The 534390 is common to both '55 (16G & 6H) with Studebaker Automatic Drive and '56-'57G,B & H with Flight-O-Matic for Starter Safety and Back-up Lamp with Saginaw Power Steering.

Of course the complete shape of the switch bracket and actuator lever is going to be different, than with No P/S or Bendix P/S.

Here is one of the very FEW under the Hood B/U/Neutral Switches still available, 1549665. You could compare to your original Switch and see if you could modify one to fit.

Thanks for that info. Mine appears similar but the bracket is a little different and doesn't extend as far. Mine is missing the part that would attach to the shift mechanism, I guess. The shaft turns but I haven't had continuity checked. Thought it'd be easy to just find a new one. Ha! Here are pictures of what I have.Click image for larger version

Wow, that IS a lot different, I was expecting it to be a lot closer. Mine is for '60 Larks and '60-'61 Hawks.

Looks like a 55 to me. Keep checking the vendors. Some one has a new or working used one around. Try an ad on the swap site. try Barry Hackney. Texas Studebaker Ranch. cheers jimmijim 281 787 6230

My parts cards say I have one which means I may or may not still have it. I will look after I get back from the Atlantic Zone Meet if you haven't found one by then.

Yes, mine is a '55 President "C" coupe -- I am not familiar with the swap site. I will hunt for it. Getting a picture of the switch correctly installed would be very interesting as well.
