  • Avanti Tacho Problem

The tacho in my 1971 Avanti 11 is acting strangely. As soon as I turn on the ignition, the needle goes all the way round past 8000 RPM and stays there until switched off. It has done this since I have owned it. Yesterday while out driving on the freeway, the needle started moving back and forward and gradually heading down to somewhere near it should be. Hit a bump, and back to the end stop again. It did not actually sit steadily on rpm, but moved around it for a short while, but now it's back to flat out. Any ideas? A bad earth perhaps. This car has been converted to right hand drive, so under the dash, it's all over the place
    Thanks in advance,
    Dave...

Ok Pete. Bring those spare air-con knobs with you.

(I hope you are not planning on seeing Collingwood in the finals! Not much chance there)

No, we lost the hunger years ago.
I don't think I have any spare a/c knobs, is there anything else you might like?

In 1971 I wrote an article in the local Avantian news letter on trouble shooting the tachometer circuit in my 1963 Studebaker Avanti. Then in 1974 the Avanti Owners Assn newsletter printed a story on how to convert your Studebaker Avanti Prestolite distributor to Chrysler electronic distributor ignition. I scanned these two articles and attached them with this post. They should offer information that might help you repair your tachometer circuit.

                Thanks John. Much appreciated.

PS John, I just noticed the date of your article. That is approx. the date my Avanti 11 was ordered from Nate Altman.
