  • Patrol Car Body Tag Info

I can't find my copy of Turning Wheels with the police cars in it. I was wondering around a wrecking yard today looking at a few Studies that they had. This one Black 62 4dr caught my eye. It had a white roof. Wow it looks like the front doors had been painted black some where through the years but they were fading back to the white paint underneath. You could see where the doors used to have an emblem on them at one time. In the trunk was a metal plate that was attached to the rear axle hump that looked factory. Maybe for mounting accessories. There isn't much left of it but the shell and the daul exhaust. Anyway, I've been looking at different body tags for so many years and have never seen on like this one before. Instead of starting with the 62S or 62v like always. Its a 62W Y3. What is it?

There was no "W" code to interchange with the V or S. W DID stand for 4-door, but that was with the earlier, short-wheelbase cars and it wouldn't have been as a suffix to the 62.
How about a pic of that body tag, or better yet, acquiring it? I'd pay something for it if it was indeed a 62W

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

I think its great you guys can go to a wrecking yard and still find an ole Stude or two there. I ask the guy at the front if he has any Studebakers, I get the look like I asked a German Shepard what time it was.[B)] Apparantly Studes were not very common here in North Texas.[V]

Here is a factory trunk photo that shows a metal plate supporting the two-radio:

Interesting - look at the location of that TT emblem.

That's where they were in '62, Bob. It does look kind of odd, so maybe that's why they did away with them in '63 on that same tail panel. Ted's Harbit's "daily driver" 1962 Cruiser has the emblem right there, but he is being a non-conformist and it is installed upside down. [:0] BP

I was pointing out the location because we often have inquires as to where that emblem should go on certain cars.

I'd bet the tag actually says 62V-Y3 - that makes more sense, "V" for 289, "Y3" for 4-door Marshal.
