Panel discussion Friday at museum marks Avanti run

SOUTH BEND -- There will be a panel discussion at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Studebaker National Museum, 201 S. Chapin St., to mark the 20th anniversary of Ron Hall's record run in his Avanti.

On Sept. 22, 1993, a 1963 Studebaker Avanti driven by Hall set a new world speed record with a two-way average of 195.6 mph at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah. Hall's return run average of 200.462 mph made his the first Studebaker-powered car to exceed the 200 mph mark.

Hull-O Ventures, in association with the Chicagoland Chapter of the Avanti Owners Association International and the Michiana Chapter of Studebaker Drivers Club, will host the discussion. Proceeds will benefit the museum.

Panelists will include: Richard Bennett III, owner and historian of the Due Cento Avanti; John Hora, owner of the No. 9 Bonneville Avanti; John Shanahan, a Studebaker historian and a member of Hall's race team; Jim Lange, a Bonneville racer and record holder; Jim Pepper and George Krem, Hall race team members; and moderator Dave Kinney.

Hall's Bonneville Avanti, Horas' No. 9 Studebaker Bonneville Avanti and another 1963 Avanti will be on display.

Cost to attend is $25.50 per person, which includes admission to the museum and a commemorative magazine about the Avanti at Bonneville. Museum membership does not qualify for this event, which is a separate fundraiser.

And a hearty thank you for all you did to make this happen. I can't think of a better way to spend quality Avanti time than listening to the discussion of the assembled panel and get a feeling for the passion they all had for this endeavor.

A DVD would be a great way to share with the unfortunates that couldn't attend and also add a few bucks to the museum's coffers.
