  • Non-stock trunk lid: trim ideas

I'm looking for ideas on what to do about trim on my trunk lid.

The car is a '58 Golden Hawk, and in the repair work related to a a fender-bender in '59 the dealer replaced the stock lid with a roundback '55 version and a Packard Hawk fake-spare shield. There is no other trim, so "Golden Hawk" does not appear anywhere on the car.

I'm considering whether to keep the clean look of the lid, or apply a Golden Hawk script (center? right side?), or just use a Packard Hawk-style bird emblem, or ... what? I also haven't decided whether to keep the fake-spare shield or go clean.

I'd like your ideas on how you'd handle these questions.

T'were it me... I'd just swap trunk lids....
With a little marketing, you might end up being money ahead on the deal...

Go with what ever you like while you own and drive it , but find the right one and have ready to install if and when you sell, getting a good one now will be better and cheaper than in years to come, the fin hawk ones with good ribs are getting hard to come by, finding a good GT and removing the overlay is one way to go but you will have some extra holes to fill I have a few in stock, if interested PM me.

I get that a lot of people would prefer to restore the car to its condition when it left the factory, and that approach certainly has its value. In my case the car has its own history and things about it that make it special, and I like that. What I'm looking for here is creative ideas about an unusual situation. Forget the rules -- what do you think would look good?

OK, here is the answer you have been wanting.
Add the Gold "Golden Hawk" script at the lower RIGHT corner, maybe 2 1/2 to 3 inches above the bottom and ending 2 to 3 inches from the right edge.

I think that clearly would look the best, however there will be a little issue with getting the Nameplates to curve without breaking, it would take a Pro Panel Beater to know how to do that.

I am on the fence about the fake spare though; I think I would try the look with it on, especially if it has some history with you.

Is there no latch handle or Key Lock in the center?

Yes, it has the latch at the center. That and the bolthole for the fake spare are the only holes in the lid.

Hi, It's your car, and been this way since 1959...just add the Golden Hawk script lower right as StudeRich suggested. Enjoy

                  I'm with StudeRich!
It's THAT car now, otherwise it'll just be one more of... & so on, so just ad the script & live with a car with special history!

I'd keep the spare tire overlay......The '53 decklid gets lost between those big fins without it. I'd advise AGAINST adding the GH nameplates to the lower corner....just wont look right. (In My opinion)

There's not much to see right now, just a blank decklid between fenders, with the fins off. I'll want to have all the trim decided and drilled before I go to paint.
