  • Daytona with disc brakes engine

My friend Homer has the 64 Daytona wagon he bought for parts. It has disc brakes. the engine in it is from a 61. What are the chances it was originally an R-1 car? Can it be told by the serial number?

Many '63-'64 Wagonaires had optional disc brakes that were not engined with R1s or R2s.
As said, yes it can be determined - on the slim chance that it was built as an R1.

Are there any clues like: 4 Speed, or Power Shift. or Bucket Seats, Traction Bars, Rear Stabilizer Bars, Fuel return Lines to the tank, Tachometer or Tach. with Redline, 140/160 MPH Speedo???

None of that stuff, just a stick with od and daytona trim.

In that case the chances are One in Ten Million that it has been heavily MODIFIED to remove everything!

so if you get the r1 engine you automatically get all that other stuff?

Of course, Either the H.D. floor shift "Power Shift" Automatic or 4 Speed are required on late '63's and all '64's the '64 came with all of it and late '63's with full package also did. see this thread, post #34:

                  http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.com/showthread.php?69410-R1-Package-car-for-sale-in-San-Francisco

A Standard "Avanti Powered" Jet Thrust equipped (non-package, non-"Super" Lark or Hawk would have a Tach. and 140 or 160 Speedometer, Seat Belts and Carpeting added (if the model had none) all had the Cool Fuel Return Line.

Thanks very much! That looks to cover it. Bottom line seems to be about any combination of options might have been available but the r engined cars are more likely to have the good stuff.

Seems that they'd make anything to get a sale, get the numbers and production order to be sure.
