  • 53 Grill question

Recently I bought a grill surround for the car.
It has been chromed completly, not just the leading edge, as i believe was original.
My plan is to mask , and paint the rear part of the grill, to something approaching original colour.

The question is, what is the original colour like?
I assume it is an as cast looking piece.
Any help, or even better a pic, would be appreciated.

    Thanks

    john

The rear part did have some chrome plating. It was painted. I use an argent or aluminum color (originally sort of a silver gray).

The rear part was partly painted, and partly chrome?

        Grill surround:
Paint the rear part (non-front surfaces) silver gray.
A not real bright aluminum paint will do.
There isn't supposed to be any chrome other than the front surface.

Mask your leading edge borders well. Scuff the surface to receive paint with a fine sandpaper or Scotchbrite and wipe with FinalKleen or PrepSol.

Exactly how I did my grille surrounds. One of the grilles I bought was NOS in the Studebaker box..so I copied that.. I clear coated both of theses painted surfaces also..

No! The rear part received some chrome plating when the whole part was plated. You should mask off the front part and paint over the chrome in the rear part with argent or aluminum color.
