Daytona Beach 1952

So is #23's rear bumper in the first set of pictures the result of an accident, or an attempt to protect the tail lights?
The bumper riders look perpendicular despite the funny bumper, and I do not see the upward bend in the second racing picture.

There is no one left living that I know of to ask about the right rear bumper position. In the left photo in my earlier post, if you enlarge that photo it appears that the bumper may be in the same position as shown in the photo taken at Daytona.
