To: sdude,----Well, it certainly would be easier to 'maintain' that area of an Avanti if it were blacked out......especially on a white car!....Still,.....Would someone paint an Avanti 'R' engine all black because the chrome parts
are too difficult to keep shiny?

So if I do'nt paint mine black in that area,no one will ever notice the fine advanced outer styling of my Avanti ?

OK, here is my opinion. If you do not have a grill in place, bet it is in body color. If you have a grill, but it is painted black. Why, with the grill in place you cannot wash the opening and it get really dirty there. If it is painted black then the dirt does not really show. Again, just my observation.

Plastic car, plastic model ...what's the difference?
Besides the cans are smaller and come in various shades and finishes...gloss, matte, semi-matte...

I have a one owner 64 and the grille area is painted the body color. Now that is not to say that the factory did not paint some cars black at some time. Having restored other make cars , there are always surprises discovered as information is gathered to what the production line was instructed to do during a certain period of time. As example there is a assembly manual for the mid year Corvette with individual pages assigned to what your job function was. These pages were modified according to what was relevant to assembly at a particular time or changes necessary because of cost or supply of materials. Just my two cents.

I have a 1963 serial # 63R-2406 and it was my uncles, the grill area in mine is gold and has no grill. He documented everything since the car was new every gallon of gas, oil, gas mileage, tires, engine trouble you name it it is wriiten down and I see no mention of the grill area being painted.

To: unimogjohn,---I've always thought that Myself.....it makes good sense. Still, when it comes to judging, (and I really HATE that word sometimes), if two 'perfect' Studebaker Avantis showed up.....The one with the radiator air intake
painted body color should get the 400 points.....The one with that same area blacked out?....maybe 399!!!
