  • Reynolds Garage & Marine Hamburg, CT

While being aware of the Reynolds' family business and its time as a Studebaker dealer I visited it for the first time last week. The business started 1n 1859 and celebrated 150 years of continuous business activity in 2009. During the celebration a very nice book was prepared which provided extensive history regsrding the business. Having never visited Hamburg before it was soon realized that the Reynolds' family has a fantastic location for the business. It is quite rural with dairy farms and other agriculture and it was a surprise to see such a thriving business located away from larger population centers. Many of the windows provide a view of the adjoining marina and the Hamburg River which flows into the Connecticut River.

Gary Reynolds has a 1950 Studebaker wrecker and a 1939 Coupe Express. The business has an original Reynolds carriage on display. You may find the link of interest if you have not viewed it, previously. It is included in a listing of former Studebaker dealers on Bob's site. You may enjoy the story if it is new to you. Happy New Year!

My 1987 Avanti Convertible was purchased from Reynolds Garage. I not sure if he sold many Avantis, but the window sticker of mine has Reynolds as the dealership.

Hayden Reynolds said he drove a 1991 Convertible to the high school prom. I don't know when they sold their last Avanti. The dealer relationships probably suffered when production was interrupted at different times for Avanti. A dealer in Fort Myers advertised Avanti. When I stopped to see them he said the two cars he had were alrready sold and I don't thnk he ever got anymore in his inventory. He had expended monay to promote a car and then couldn't make it available to interested prospective customers. Supreme Auto in Naples represented Avanti before that period and I saw a white four-door sedan around town. Supreme had a nice Avanti sign for several years and I heard a hurricane may have removed it.

Bob,that 39 coupe express is green if I remember correctly.do'nt remember the wrecker "or maybe I do given time to think back".my Father bought out what parts and books were left over in the Summer of 77,and a 62 Lark Regal 4dr.there were other Studes around also, and a Champ truck with a 66 Lark type front end on it "boy was that different".I also liked the stone work of that building.

Thanks, Joe. I had asked a salesman what happened to the Studebsker inventory, etc., but he didn't know as he wasn't around when it happened. I didn't get to see the wrecker or pick-up, as they were at another location. As for the carriage, it appears they were made by many small companies just like the early car industry. My grandfather and uncle were selling carriages at the turn of the previous century in Shipshewana, IN at their hardware store. I have not been able to find out who made the carriages.

That 1991 was/is a rare speciman anywhere. There were only 15 made. The body was also a one year item, like the 1990.

They were always knowledgeable and friendly when I was nearby in the 70s.

They are still the same! The dealership was selected as #1 in service by Suburu in the U.S. Glad to see a family-owned business that sold Studebakers still doing well in the marketplace.

Frank: Thanks! Haven't seen many ads like that for the later Avanti autos.
