For the past 12 0r so years I have spent most of my Saturdays at the shop working on a Studebaker of some sort unless there is something else of interest going on. The past two Sat's have fallen into the later category.
Last Sat. we were in Daytona at the Turkey Run. The week before was the big swap meet in Moultrie. Josh was anxious to get back to work on his Lark this weekend but I had more pressing problems.
I am by trade,a Masonry contractor. Since the Late 70"s I have bought 7 Mortar mixers. I still have all of them. Back in the good old republican days when building was going strong. I some times had 2 0r 3 jobs going at one time and needed more than one mixer.
In the past few years building around here has slowed to a snail's pace. Where I once ran a 12 man crew, I now have 1 full time Mason and 2 part time helpers.
Lately when we would have a mixer break down instead of fixing it,we would push it behind the building and say "WE don't really need this one right now.We have some good ones and the spare."
Well, last week the last good one broke down and all we had was the spare! So today I determined to fix some mixers. The shaft bearings had gone out in Mixer #6 so Josh and I were taking it apart when Son-In-law Jack (Matthew's Dad) came up.
Jack and I devised a plan to combine Mixers #3 and #4 to make 1. Welding was required so Jack took the frame to his shop.
Josh and I went back to #6. Josh was holding heat on a bearing housing with the torch while I was framing on it with a hammer when Son-in-law Mitchell (Josh's Dad) showed up. He relieved Josh of the torch duty and Josh went about cleaning his newly aquired TT rear axel and prepping it for paint.
Mitchell and I got the new bearings installed in #6 about the time Jack showed up with the refurbished frame from#4 on which we will mount #3.
If all goes well, we will go back tomorrow after church and put everything back togather and will again have 2 good mixers and the spare.
I am truly grateful for my family! even the IN-LAWs are pretty cool. And when I got home, Grandaughter Haleigh was here! Life is good!!
Yes, Josh did get his rear axle painted.
