Many good thoughts and ideas in this thread, and it sounds like Bobby has plenty of driving experience - and he probably did the best he could in that situation.
I don't remember any late model Camaro ever achieving a 5 star crash rating. Sadly, even if they did, the insurance industry rates the late model F-body cars as one of the highest fatality rates. All the safety gear cannot protect against really bad driving decisions.
My business is commercial trucks, but occaisionally my customers need car or truck for their son or daughter. For the young first time driver I spend a little time telling them not to do anything stupid - and especially not to let their "friends" talk them into any car driving stunts. I also tell them that talking on a cell phone is the same as driving drunk - to reinforce this I ask them to look at the next slow driving swerving driver they see and to make a mental note if they can see the person is on the phone.
