  • Still looking for an Avanti

I've mentioned this in a couple posts, but I figured I might as well start my own thread!
I've been in the market for the last couple months, looked at a couple in person, and probably should have bought one of them. It was a 68 in near perfect condition except for a couple flaws in the paint that would have required at least two major panels to be repainted. I'm trying to avoid getting into a repaint, but if I do I'm going to have to get the car cheap, or as I see it I'll be upside down before I begin.
I love the 63's because of the round headlight frames, and who wouldn't want an R2 in turquoise, but I'm a realist. I want a nice, hopefully original color car with chrome bumpers and some HP!
I also want to keep this project under $20K, so buying one across country that needs paint for $18K isn't going to work for me. I can handle mechanical work, I can redo an interior if need be, and a small paint problem isn't a problem since I know a couple painters who can do wonders. I can change wheels and tires, and if it's an Avanti II I probably would unless it has Magnum 500's already on it! If it's a later II and the price is right, I'd actually enjoy dropping in a warmed up 350.
Anyway, that's my story. I've seen almost everything out there on CL and Hemmings, but I'm being pretty picky about this purchase.

Have you looked at this one? http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/3341567198.html The paint isn't that good, but the rest of the car is as sound as one could ever hope to find.

Yes, in fact you told me about that one before it went on CL, and I appreciate it! I haven't seen it in person, but after talking to the owner I decided with a complete paint job plus the non original motor that I know I'd want to change, I'd be over $20K in no time.
It does look nice in the photos, though.

Just spent a couple of minutes noodling around in "Searchtempest" for Avanti and found 10 or so in the first couple on minutes. You"ll find them and more if you set the search distance to 2500 miles or so. It searches craigslist across the country.

        Enjoy, Bob

I think you might have told me about Searchtempest on the AOAI forum awhile back. Actually, there's one called Autotempest that looks only for cars. I check it every day. Sometimes three times....
I've talked to a few owners, missed the 82 in Montana for $10K. That might have been a good deal for me, too. Had a body off paint job, redone interior, etc. I would have just had to drop in a 350...
But I wasn't quick enough on the trigger!

I have a 63 I've been thinking of selling as I hardly drive it since the gas prices in California have gone insane. If you are interested, send me a PM and I'll send you info about the car. Bud

I have noticed a dearth of Studebaker Avantis on eBay recently.

This Black square headlight '64 in DRY Spokane, WA looks like a really great original car, if you can get past the Black paint.
That beautiful condition Interior is not the common, basic, solid color
Maroon Vinyl material, it is the rare late model '64 only, "marble look" multi-Color Burgandy material. Like it or not, it's rare.

The only clue we have that the Engine is not original is the '64 "Avanti Supercharged" Emblems, on a Air Conditioned R1 looking Engine, which MAY still be the original RS (Supercharged) block! Unless you have more detailed info than what is on the Ad.

If it has the RS heads, it should run nicely on Regular fuel.
I think I would plug the Emblem holes and enjoy it.

Concur, that black 64 is a good buy. Is that an "Avanti Supercharged" emblem on the fender? (I realize it is now air conditioned)

I talked to the owner and he has moved to Portland with the car. The original engine has been replaced with a 259 with air conditioning. He said it had been done by a previous owner and they had done a good job using the original panel vents. I have not seen the car and don't figure to go to Portland to check it out. He said the paint is not very good.

                            from Mr Johnstone's site posted in august 2012 re: R-5307 - http://www.studebaker-info.org/AVDB1...5307x0812.html

some are the same pics in the ad...

not a big deal, but shouldn't the trunk have "Studebaker" instead of the "Avanti" script?

                            i like black Avantis.

i'd go $8 to $9K if the "bottom" is much more than halfway decent, and it was nearby - if i was looking for one.

Here's a new listing on Ebay for a 63 R2 4-speed. Low mileage but sounds like a few potential issues. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1963-...item3f1ec7b901

This would be my choice if I were to look at a 63-64.

OOPS!!! Pretty far away from you.
