  • Power steering pump return with cooler install

    Hello,

I install a cooler on the power steering pump to maintain low temp on the freshly rebuilt original Saginaw . When the car is off the pump tank stays full but when the engine is running, the tank level goes low. Do I need another reservoir to maintain constant flow at same level?

    My engine is 93 SBC 350 5.7.

That is a H.D. SIX TUBE Transmission Cooler, way too much for Power Steering.

You could have used it on your Flight-O-Matic Trans. if you have one, but your transmission case does not have the required fittings and internal tubes to connect a Cooler, except on the Golden Hawk H.D. units.

Update: I just noticed something odd about this thing, instead of the normal one fitting IN and ONE OUT, there are four! It looks like it is setup to have 4 Tubes for the Trans. and 2 for the Power Steering possibly. That would be way overkill since you could only use the 2 for P/S.

"See back of card for more info." It appears that Left to Right:

    Fitting #1 = Trans. -IN
    Fitting #2 = Trans. -OUT
    Fitting #3 = P/S -IN
    Fitting #4 = P/S -OUT

OK sorry, you have a MODIFIED '57 President, probably the only one in the World! If you have a Turbo-Hydramatic Trans. on your Ch#*y 350 maybe you could use the Trans. Cooler.

Why would the power steering need a cooler?

Thank you for the replied. I did not mention the second circuit I'm using it for a transmission cooling on the Chevy 750 tranny. The first circuit is the one connected to the pump tank.

I believe it might not have being necessary but since the cooler I bought was for 2 circuits and I live in hot florida.

Open the return line to the P/S Pump, start the engine on slow idle and bleed some fluid into a clean, clear 1 gallon bottle and watch for air in the system.
Or feed the hose into the open Resevoir to watch for air, it could be air locked.

I am sorry, that is all I can come up with not knowing the routing of hoses and Trans. connections it is hard to know why you cannot maintain a constant fluid level.

Not sure that you really need a cooler on the power steering system but that's beside the point. How is the cooler and the lines mounted; are any of them higher than the reservoir in the pump? You could be getting drain back from the cooler back into the reservoir for the pump when the engine is off.

                  Hello,

Yes the cooler is mounted infront of the radiator and i ran the lines from the pump reservoir down to the radiator rail across and up to the cooler in/out ports.

Then I would say you are getting drain back from the cooler when the motor is shut off; that is why it has more fluid in it when not running. But without seeing it that is just a best guess.

Ok I will make video of it but you are right on what you are saying, in that case what options do I have?
