My 61 came with the Hawks on the seats. Phantom Auto Works has assured me they have the correct fabric in black, in stock. My interior is red with the black cloth insert.

      hi guys,
there was an article on 61 Hawks by Fred Fox in TW about 10 years ago.

That should give you the production nos of cars with 4 speed.

Not all 61 Hawks came with buckets seats.

US, Canadian, Australian built cars, all had buckets.

Belgian assembled cars were available with bench seats as Standard on 6cyl models.

I have no idea of what seats the Cars made in the Utenlage plant had in them

To answer your original question, there was an article in Turning Wheels some years ago that stated only 347 4-speed/bucket seat '61 Hawks were made. I don't recall now how they arrived at that figure, but it was supposed to be a fairly solid figure.

My '61 Hawk story: In the early 90's I made a deal on a '61. On the way to pick it up, I learned about another '61 4-speed/bucket car for sale. I ended up buying both, and using the best parts from both to finish one. One day at a car show a fellow walked up and started talking about the '61 his Dad owned many years prior (he still had the original dash plaque). From clues he dropped I realized it was the 2nd Hawk I had and said "that car's parked next to my garage as we speak". Needless to say he was pretty excited, and ended up buying the car.

Lynn, the possible buyer of a 1961 4-speed Hawk who emailed me for information, wanted me to thank you all for being able to answer his question on this forum of: "How many 1961 Hawks were made with 4-speeds and buckets?" Your answer: "347 4-speed/bucket seat '61 Hawks were made". I copied and pasted all of your responces and comments and they really pumped him up about this Hawk and Studebaker's in general. I think he is going to buy it! Thanks again everyone! Ed

The 1961 HAwks were collected as the first true GT HAwk when they were still almost new. The 4 speed is another big 'plus'. These are great cars.

Mike, its a repeat of the 1930's when Studebaker referred to their cars as 'champions' as an adjective a number of years before making it a noun in 1939 by using 'Champion' as a nameplate. Before the 1962 models, some ads referred to the Hawk as a 'Gran Turismo', an adjective to describe how it rides. Again, the 'Gran Turismo' became a noun when it was applied as a name for 1962. I know its confusing, but that's the best way to describe the way Studebaker advertising worked at times.[8]

My computer had a hicup or else I did, To finish my reply,My Hawk 61V16251 had little Birds in the black cloth due to wear it was replaced with black cloth. Over the past 44 years it has been changed a little with addition of supercharger and hood. If Phantom has the hawk material in black I may be forced to get the correct material. I have no problems making changes in MY car because thats the way I want it. If every one of the stories of people having had a car just like my hawk studebaker must have sold a lot more cars than they kept records of. Or some people can't tell a Studebaker Hawk from anything else with 4 wheels.
