Eat at Joe's Tavern. Off beat, locals, cocktails, Specials include prime rib in two cuts on Friday nights $13.00 for the "Sophie cut". Owner is behind the long bar pouring drinks, and loves when Stude's roll in. Not far from the Plant. Was a film location for "Rudy". When you order a cocktail there is actually booze in it. Bring a designated driver.

For Italian, SUNNY ITALY just across the river from the headqurters hotel is good food. stupak

Yep, we ALWAYS make SUNNY ITALY on Niles Ave. a "to do dinner" when we are in SB. A real treat, been going there since the 70's. Eating there was mentioned in one of the Factory Promo Films. It is one of South Bend's oldest family owned restaurants.
The red & white checkered table cloths are still there, though Mom & Pop are gone, I think the Daughter runs it now.
AND, the homemade Italian sausage is primo!!!!!
I think they are only open Thurs. thru Sunday nowadays.

The House of Pancakes, on north Ironwood at Edison, is noted for their fantastic breakfasts, and about 15 minutes from downtown. Papa Joe's in Mishawaka is REAL ITALIAN, but only open Friday and Saturday nights. It's a small place, and you need to call ahead and make a reservation. If you want a primo prime rim or steak, go to Heston Bar, about 30 minutes west of the proving grounds between SB and Michigan City. Watch for the sign on US20 going west for Heston, turn right or north, and follow the road about 6 miles. Your out in the middle of knowhere, but it's well worth the trip. A little expensive, but GOOD MEAT! They have a good menu of other things too.

The first place that comes to my mind is Tippecanoe Place. It was the mansion of Clement Studebaker and is an excellent restaurant for either lunch or dinner.
Other than that, I'm relying on my AAA book.

Been there done that, that is why we have reservations for Friday night in place of the Awards dinner for 10 people, we will come by awards part after but with people out of state and out of the country need to go to Tippecanoe Place. if you have not had lunch or dinner there you need to go once just to see the place, first class .

Having been gone from the Michiana area for many years I claim no current expertise on places to dine because change occurs. The Carriage House at 24460 Adams Road was a place that we visited on special occasions. It was excellent and I enjoyed it most if my dear departed mother-in-law picked up the tab! Maury's Pub in Mishawaka was another favorite and was a haven for Notre Dame fans on football weekends. Considerable memorabilia and in the old days was known as Pat's Colonial Pub.

I must second what Bob Petersen says about Tippecanoe Place. The history of Clem Studebaker's home is amazing in itself. Whilst the inside of the building suggests it may be expensive it is quite reasonable if you check their menu on their site. I have been going there since 1980 & enjoy every visit. I even have a silver pickle fork with Tippecanoe inscribed on the handle from the Clem Studebaker days that I snared on Ebay some years ago. Make the effort to go there & enjoy yourself.

I always stop at Joe's when I'm in SB! I was there in May and last month. He's talking about being closed the week of the IM. Give Brian a call and ask him to reconsider. He was thinking about it when I left.

We usually eat at least once at the Ponderosa in Roseland when we are in South Bend. It is "All you can eat"

I recommend Siam Thai, 221 N Main St. Definitely go to Tippecanoe Place if you have never been there! We were able to just walk around and check it out when there in May. However, if you are adventurous, try Siam Thai. I have been there probably four times over the last five years and have never had a bad meal. You will leave with your taste buds dancing. Wow! Of course you better like Thai food. Its walking distance to the host hotel too!

Try Macris in Mishawaka. Their menu is fantastic and they have a number of different rooms you can eat in.
