• Single Copies of Hemmings Muscle Machines

'Just heard from Dan Strohl, the Hemmings in-house author who wrote the six-page piece on Ted Harbit's Stude Tomato appearing in the August 2007 Hemmings Muscle Machines.

Dan asked that I remind everyone: If you want a copy of the magazine and cannot find one locally, or live too far from a major bookseller/newsstand, you can call them toll-free for single-copy sales: 1-800-227-4373.

As I said, this is an accurate article, very complimentary to Ted and Studebakers. The six pages are in full color and contain 12 photographs. BP

    Bob,

Is there any particular reason Mr.Strohl re-named Ted's car "Flyin' Tomato" ????? That's like changing one of your childrens names for an article. Just curious if he had a reason. The article is fantastic!!!.

Yeah, I bought my copy at a local news stand today. Read the article as soon as I got in the truck1

The "Flyin' Tomato thing is a real head-scratcher. I've NEVER heard it referred to (the car) by that moniker. WEIRD. "Stewed Tomato" makes sense. "Flyin' Tomato" sounds like a refernce to some fairy tale conveyance - sorta like Cinderella's Pumpkin carriage![xx(]

Of course, in the end, it's the recognition that's paramount. Ted and the car are the focus and rightly so.

Good question, Dan, and one I cannot answer! I suspect he really didn't make the connection between Stude and Stewed Tomato, and didn't realize the nickname Stude belonged in front of the word Tomato. Just a hunch.

Now, here's the more amusing part of the article that kind of had Ted a little "fried"...as in tires.

Although it says Dan Strohl was the photographer, he was not. In fact, he's never seen the car in person, as far as I know. The photographer was Indianapolis resident, professional photographer Roy Query. (I know Roy because he spent a whole day "shooting" my 17,000-mile 1973 Mustang convertible 'way back in 1978. I still have it, and the actual mileage is 17,812...IIRC.)

Anyway, when Roy showed up for the photo shoot at Ted's, Roy insisted that Ted get out on the Madison/Grant County Line Road that borders the north side of Ted's property and do a series of burn-outs. Lots of smoke, Roy said, [u]LOTS</u> of smoke...and "I'll yell when you can back off, Ted." [}]

So Ted 'lit 'em up and lit 'em up ad infinitum until Roy was happy. [}][}]

However, the county had just done a "chip & seal" on that road. There were lots of sharp pieces of rock in the "pavement." Ted actually ruined the rear tires on The Tomato so Roy could get all the "smokeys" he wanted. (Good thing the car now has flanged axles.)

And you can see how many of those burn-outs made it into the article: ZERO

As a result, Ted had to move those rear tires to the front of The Tomato before we went to The South Bend Int'l and Martin races in June, because they had such poor traction from being chewed up during that photo shoot. [:0]

Ah, the price of fame...[:0][xx(] BP
