  • Have You Used GAS TANK RENU I have an IMPORTANT QUESTION

I have a RENU tank and in another post I said I am using GUNK Lead Additive. Another forum memebr posted the following: "If you have a with a gas tank that has ever been sealed in the past with a system such as Gas tank RENU or similar marketed repair systems DIY coating systems you should never use lead additive in that tank. It will destroy the sealer coating."

I have contacted RENU and they are researching this comment. This may take a while. They said in 25 years they have never had a tank seal lift but they are willing to look into this.

In the mean time I can't wait...because I just this weekend added the Gunk brand and now I'm concerned. So please advise if you have a RENU tank and are using a lead additive.

The other post is titled about Gunk Lead Additive is near this post. Thanks.

I think that is a reasonable reply that the RENU people gave you.
With today's chemical coctails, you never know exactly what will affect what any more....

My suggestion is run that tank of mixture out! You can even refill when its half full to thin that junk out, you should not need a lead additive anyway, especially if you have the stock 8.5 Compression '61 Hawk Engine.

Also if your area is like mine, we have 76 Union Ethanol free Reg. 87/Half and Half 89/ and Premium 92 Fuel, look for it at the better Oil Co's. in the area.

Nowdays we have Stelite faced, stainless steel H.D. Valves and hardened Valve Seats to install at a valve grind, and most Good Machine Shops will recommend them before doing the valves or a Rebuild.

if you find out that lead additive will dissolve Por-15 gas tank sealer, let me know - i still have some on my garage floor from when i sealed the avanti gas tank in 2009!

i wouldn't worry about it. then again, i wouldn't use the lead additive either.

i'd be more worried about the dang ethanol... a little av-gas is good, but find a ethanol-free gas station near you...

          Yes, and no problems.

Gas Tank ReNu did the tank in my 1956 Packard Clipper Super hardtop maybe 9 years ago.

I have used Gunk brand lead substitute from time to time since then, but not continuously. No problems. BP

Bob thanks for the answer. Stude Rich and Corvanti thanks for replying as well but as you know this is a big country. I CAN NOT find Ethanol Free within 100 miles. As far as aviation fuel I would be half empty after driving home from filling up at a small airport! I love where I live but the great outdoors is without a doubt to my west.

In the other post on this I wrote the following just FYI:

Why do you believe that this additive would destroy a RENU (trade mark) restored tank? I did speak with an engineer there and he is attempting to research the claim. I supplied him with the CAS #'s and information from the back of this product. He stated RENU has been in business 25 years and has NEVER had problem with the product dissolving or lifting. I tried putting the stuff on old paint, and old silk screened yard sign, and an old body panel. No lifting or break down of the paint. I can't see how it can hurt the RENU tank if it can't even lift marker from a yard sign. Please advise why you wrote that as I do have the RENU tank and am using this product. RENU engineering will get back to me but probably in several days. Thanks

Perhaps keep an eye on your fuel filter, change regularly if the liner does come off it will be in very small pieces. You should be fine.

I heard back from the Gunk Manufacturers with the following quote:

Thank you for contacting RSC Chemical Solutions on this matter. I’m not sure why you were told that this product would cause harm in this situation, but I can assure you that it would not. Our team here takes every precaution when developing these products and this will not destroy the coating.

                  Regards

Where abouts in Central Jersey are you? There are a lot of small airports all around the state.

I'm in Middletown (Exit 114 on Parkway). I know Allaire Airport is off exit 98. About 50 miles round trip for aviation fuel.

Yea I guess you weren't kidding about having to go west for AV. I have the luxury of having 2 small airports within 5 minutes of my house. I put AV in everything I own (non-cat of course).
