If the driver of that Stude made a high speed run, I sure hope He tied the hood down! (I had a bad experience along these lines once!)

Yep, I thought about that too. I would sure like to know more about this picture, espcially the role that Hawk played in it.

loks like the car behind the Hawk has it's hood up too. I wonder if that is for some kind of inspection for engine size, type or class?

Thats an awesome picture and I wonder if it has any other info, date or any clue to the car/driver? Looks like a '56 grille badge?

Remember A few years back were we looking to match a car to a timing slip showing speeds no one has ever heard of at Daytona in a 56J

The closer I look, never mind. Thats a NASCAR official, not a Timing Association guy............

That sign above, does it read flying mile? This picture does not seem right to me.

I wonder if Shifter 4 was there that day?

Looks like some form of signage on the Hawk's door....I'd guess it was definitely there to run! (I'm picturing in My mind 374CI, Dual Four Barrel Carbs, Isky cam & Kit, Mallory Dist. & Coil, and, of course, 3 Speed O/D). A
3.31 rear in place of the stock 3.92 would also be interesting!

I got the original picture on the H.A.M.B. with no explanation other than "Daytona Beach 1956." I went looking and came up with two pictures. The first shows a NASCAR offical flagging a Thunderbird at the 1956 Speed Trials.

The second is a factory sponsored Plymouth that turned 124 mph at that same event.

It seems that in 1956 the speed trials were held in December. I saw that in 1957 they were held in February.

Neil.... I was in school, (11 1/2 years old) being good . All of the support stuff was during the week.
Here are some of the results. Note that there was 2 GH's
                  listed.

                  And here , a Studillac ! Listed as a Hybrid !

Apparently , the beach was pretty bad for most of the early week that year, but a NE wind
flattened it out in time to get everything in.

I was there when Andy Granatelli made this run. The beach was pretty so- so then too, and I always remember seeing him come down the beach with headlights on , and "porpoising "
                  big time. What a thrill . http://chrysler300country.com/1960_3...granatelli.htm

I remember reading about that black T-Bird. It had the windshield removed, fairings over the headlamps, and a McCulloch Supercharger pumping into three two barrel carbs.

                      Golden Hawk on the Beach

The picture at the top of this thread is from the Measured Mile speed runs held on February 21, 1956 on the beach course in Ponce Inlet, FL. Anyone was welcome to bring their car and participate in the Measured Mile/Flying Mile speed runs for a nominal fee. The beach course used for these events was the same beach portion of the race course used for the 4.1 mile oval races held there from 1948 through 1958. There were two white 1956 Golden Hawks that participated in these events in 1956. Attached are pictures of those two.
Wallace Chandler from Lansing, Michigan ran in a two tone 1956 Golden Hawk. Attached is a photo of him and the GH. Also attached is a copy of his Official Certificate of Speed signed by Bill France, Sr., attesting to his one way speed of 127.343mph.
Following are pictures of a solid dark color 1956 GH starting the speed run and at the finish of the run.

To:trnstrtrk,------ In case You don't know it, You really made everyones day with those great (and rare) photos!!! Interesting about the White GH...It's running what looks to Me like narrow whitewall tires, kind of
                          rare for 1956? Thanks again!

The whitewalls on the white Hawk are definitely not was wide as the ones on Wallace Chandler's GH. They appear some wider in my original b/w 8 x10.

To: trnstrtrk,----- What detail!....Kind of looks like the White GH threw a rear wheelcover by the end of the run, and the dark colored GH is spitting sand on it's take-off!...WOW
