Seems like a few folks back then figured the '64 Avantis would be the last Avantis and put them away.

The 64 R1 (R5269) mentioned by jts359 is in my care in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I knew the original owner, Vergil Rice, in Mountain View, California in the late 1960s. I had a 63 R2 4 speed at the time. Vergil lived 2 blocks from me and I saw the car often. At the time, he also had a 63 R3 with air as a daily driver. R5269 now has 4536 documented miles and is still just like new! I am grateful for the care the previous owners gave this special Avanti.

I wonder how many miles (very fast miles) are on the #9 Bonneville car?

JerryL, I was a friend and business partner of Vergil Rice back in the 70's. He sold that car (5269) at San Luis Obispo in 72 to Adrian Dorsman of Bellflower. Was just visiting his daughter Cherril the other day and she was wondering what ever happened to his 3rd Avanti that his wife Jean sold to Jer Taylor at his funeral in 77.

Alan, I found Vergil's 3rd Avanti (R5367) a while ago. It appears that it has been owned by Richard Morris of Renton, WA since 2001 (18,000 miles then). Rich had a post on the forum in 2009 ( http://forum.studebakerdriversclub.c...i-values/page2 ), and the car is listed at http://www.studebaker-info.org/avantix5.html. Vergil wrote about his three Avantis, and the 3rd was from southern California and needed some body work, so he did a mild custom on it. Thanks for your post, it is nice to converse with a friend of Vergil. I knew that Vergil sold 5269 at a meet in San Luis Obispo, and Adrian Dorsman's name is in the documentation that came with the car. I do not know how many miles were on 5269 when Adrian bought it, and he sold it in the 1970s to Joe Erdelac. I am still researching the exact dates and mileages for when Adrian bought and sold 5269.

Rich Morris is on this forum and has since sold it about 2 years ago to Mike Minke also of Washington. Saw Mike and the car at Bellingham a year and a half ago. Went looking for Stone but he was a no show. Vergil sold 5269 to Adrian on June 25, 1972 it had less than 500 miles on it when I saw it on the weekend of June 23-25, 1972. He said that the mileage was from Reno at the dealer where his son picked it up for him, to home and down to SLO. Adrian had an electrical fire in his Avanti on the way to SLO and had his car towed back. He went home to Mountain View with Vergil, then drove to Bellflower. So there should have been about 1,000 miles on it.

Bill, are you in the market for an Avanti now? Is the 66 coming up for sale, just curious and are taking it to SB?

No, some new friends have been looking for a low-mileage Studebaker Avanti, that's all.

Joe Erdelac's name brings back memories of him and his collection during the 1970s. I got fairly close with him and had access to his collection because I went there in my 1953 Commander Starliner. He had me on the lookout for low mileage Avantis for him. His best Avantis were covered up in the rear shop. This included a Sears Allstate cross country car that he had shipped in from California (not usual at the time) in order to keep the mileage down and 5643, the last Avanti manufactured by Studebaker and the last factory R3 with 6K miles on it.
