Did you see that Kenny Bernstein just announced his retirement from drag racing altogether?

This is the only other picture I have of that car. It was called the Deceptive Lark. I hardly ever took the hood off so everyone thought it was Bow Tie or Olds powered. I used to make a buck a pop betting them it was Stude powered. I bought it for $50 in 1970 to replace my wrecked Hawks. I used it as a driver until 1971. I was working at Rancho Exxon and my boss asked me what I was going to do with it. I told him I wanted to go racing. So he sponsored the gas for the car and the tow car (the 1962 Dodge Polara in the other pictures). So in 1971 my little brother Bill and I raced the car every weekend that Summer. We traded the track record with a guy with an Olds Cutlass all Summer. We had a blast.

It was powered by a 259 with 12 to 1 compression, Howards Custom Cam of my design, Ported heads, Wiend 2X2 manifold with stock 259 carbs off of cars I had bought. I built a nasty shifting medium case Cruise-O-Matic trans for my Silver Hawk and it found it's way into this car. We gutted the car of all unnecessary weight including the inner fenders. I even removed the back slider windows and had sponsor signs painted on thin hardwood to make it lighter. I wanted to run as light as possible in the class to make up for having less power than the Olds. Ran in "F" gas if memory serves me right. Brother Bill would know for sure. He took his first pass down a race track in that car. One night I got eliminated early and we decided to run in the consolation runs. Just for time only. We found something to lift Bill up (he was 14 at the time) and strapped him in. He thought he was busted when a track official started walking towards the car. The guy motioned for him to hook his chin strap. After Bill got it hooked the guy gave him the thumbs up and he was on his way. Late in 1972 I sold the car and never saw it again.

Just realized that the one picture shows my little brother leaning against the car. That picture was also taken at Lions. We also ran the car at Irwindale and few times at Orange County International. I will check with Bill but I think the fastest the car ran was high 13's on cheater slicks. Might have been faster but my memory is shot. I mean we had 14 Studebakers and I was always building two or three race cars at a time. I was street racing a lot too. That engine and trans combo made me a lot of money on the street in 1968 and 1969. It was originally in my 1959 Silver Hawk. Here's a shot of the Hawk in action:

                            More info

Looking at the interior you will notice the stickers on the side of the dash. Those are pit passes from Orange County and Irwindale. I left the sun visor in place as that had always been the place I kept my race log. You can see it clipped to the visor. Next to it is a pen. Man looking at these pictures sure brings back memories. Also the seat is a left over from my Hawk. As a young man it was imperative that I have reclining bucket seats in my Hawk. Had to make adapter plates but it was so worth it.

Great story, Dan. You are fortunate to have even those photos.

A thoroughly enjoyable read; thanks. BP
