  • Avanti parts question

We picked up pick up truck load of Avanti and Avanti II parts this weekend. Most of the stuff is too gone for any purpose but I did find a few treasures. I have a lot of interior stainless, don't know where most of it goes, but I'll look in the parts manual and maybe figure most of it out.

My first of probably many questions is, did any of the square headlamp cars have glass covers over them? I have a glass cover that looks new but don't remember seeing any on a car.

I have plenty of brackets and obscure little parts. Let me know what you need and I might just have it.

Yes...'64s and Avanti II's have glass covers over the headlights. I believe at some point in the '70s there was talk of eliminating them due to Federal regulations but I don't know if that actually happened. I can't think of seeing an Avanti II that didn't have glass lenses...at least prior to the 1984 change to rectangular sealed beams.

Actually, the rectangular glass lenses are easier to find in good shape than are the original design round lenses...Studebaker must have had a ton of them made before shutting down Avanti production.

I don't know which year it was enacted, but no Avantis were built with glass covers on the headlights for a number of years. My '72 had them, my '76 did not (bought new), but my '83 also bought new, a Blake car, did have them . I think Steve Blake got some sort of exemption allowing them to use the glass covers again.
