  • 6 volt starting problem solved

Late last season, my 53 began to give me fits with starting when hot. Was behaving OK this season until recently. The starter had been rebuilt, had heavy cables, all seemed OK. I put a voltmeter across the solenoid, and found 1.5 volts dropped across it when starting! Replaced the solenoid and she turns over like new again. Starters don't have much torque with 25% less voltage!

It is so hard to keep all of your 6 volt cables and connections in good order. It is nearly a full time job checking over it all, to keep them starting properly.
