Two major misconceptions here.

The PT Cruiser came out in 2000 as a 2001 model. The main similarity with a 2001 Neon is some of the front suspension. The PT Cruiser uses a four speed automatic with OD and the Neon used a thre speed automatic with direct drive. The PT Cruiser has a 2.4 litre engine and the NEON had a different engine with 2.0 litres of displacement. The PT Cruiser uses a Watts linkage rear suspension and the Neon didn't. These are a few major differences in chassis. The misconception is based on many erroneous car magazine articles that were written on false assumptions/information before the PT Cruiser came out.

Neither the Neon nor the PT Cruiser have any base in Mitsubishi. Many other Chrysler products of the past (Colt,etc.) and more recent past (Sebring, etc.) did have a Mitsubishi connection.

Actually, many vintage racers really like and promote the virtues of those GM TH300 and Pontiac TempesTorque 2-speed autos, because they can launch hard and don't upshift 'til 50 or so.

Sonw and ice starts was the reason many people liked the second gear start. I have heard people say the rear end was weak and needed a second gear start.

I always used to manually shift my GMC longbed into 2nd at stoplights on rainy days!!
