  • 1962 Lark V8: front sway bar standard or optional?

My 1962 Lark has a front sway bar and can't remember for the life of me whether it was standard or an option on the V8 cars.

Sold my 1962; Studeless at the moment

Every 1962 Lark with a six that I have scrapped had a front sway bar. Looking at my 1961 price card it says that in 61 a sway bar was standard equipment for a six but I do not see a option notation for a V8 Sway/Stabilizer bar but 61 and 62 are different model years.

My 1962 has sway bars front and rear - according to the '62 Lark brochure PD-62-08 a stabiliser bar is standard :- " Stabiliser Bar reduces sway and roll, enhances cornering ability. Combines with front coil springs, asymmmetrically mounted rear springs and direct action shock absorbers to assure an excellent ride at any speed."

Thanks for the answers everyone. I'm surprised at a rear sway bar being available on any Stude before 1963............

Just pulled off the rear sway bar setup off a '53 Land Cruiser parts car for my '59 Lark. Had one on my old '58 President also. Like everyone says, Studes were ahead of there time.....

              Rear Stabilizer Bars

The Rear Stabilizer Bars were used on '53 to '58 Y Body, long wheelbase Sedans only.

A Super Lark or Hawk, an Avanti Powered Lark or Hawk so ordered, or an Avanti.

I do not remember ever seeing them as options even on other models, though we all know if you really wanted something enough to special order it, Studebaker would build it.
But how MANY are we talking about like that, where they were ordered by Corp. employees, Salesmen, Service Managers or someone in the know, very very few, so chances of finding one originally equipped today, are as close to 0 as you can get.

On the Front Stabilizers, the '59 & '60 Lark VI's had NO front Stabilizer Bar, and all other Sixes use the '53-'57 early type, without any anti-dive built in, so they are mounted from the left "A" Arm to the right one and not to the frame like a V-8.

Just an interesting aside, a guy I know had a '49(?) Olds 88 2 dr with a front/rear sway bars. That thing was loaded though, 4bbl V8, auto, p/s, etc. Talk about doing a double take.

I may be wrong but I thought that I was told I had a rear sway bar, didn't do the work myself.
