  • Avanti vs Lark - Weight?

How much did the Avanti weigh compared to a Lark? My title shows the weight of my '64 Daytona to be an even 3200 pounds. As Avanti's were made of fiberglass, is it reasonable to assume they weighed less, of was the longer list of standard equipment enough to offset any benefit of the fiberglass?

According to Langworth's book "Studebaker, the Postwar Years", in 1963 a Lark weighed from 2650 lbs. (Std. 2 dr. sdn -6 cyl) up to 3065 lbs. for a Cruiser model. Wagons more obviously. Avanti's are in at 3,140 lbs.

Similar comparisons for 1964 with all cars weighing a bit more than '63.

Although Studebaker itself is guilty of publishing a 3,140 lb weight for the Avanti - that was just what engineering had projected, the reality is the Avanti ended up considerably heavier.

My '63 Avanti R2 4 speed power steering, brakes, windows, and wire wheels weighed in at 3,630 lbs with a full tank of gas. Of course an Avanti stipped down to the basics: three speed manual, no power steering or anything else will weigh in a bit less - but not 400 lbs less. I also checked my front to rear weight distribution; at just over 2100 lbs on the front it is 58% front.

Maybe the engineering department "forgot" to add the 175 lb weight of the X brace girder used to stiffen up the Lark frame.

And Tom, remember those weights are shipping weights. As many cars as Stude shiped it saved them a few bucks.

Thanks guys! They're both a little heavier than I thought.

Generally speaking... OE street fiberglass weighs as much as, and sometimes more, than sheet metal.

I went up to the transfer station and weighed my 63 R1 Avanti (with all options: Air, Auto, PS, HD springs, TT, etc) and a full tank of gas...it came out at 3510.
