Idenification

Is there any literature available to identify particular years of Studebaker trucks? Also, I am planning to begin a restoration project on an old family Studebaker Truck and would like contact information for drivetrain specilists in the NC/SC area. I will handle some, but my busy schedule prohibits me from doing restoring myself. I can take the body and interior to most any shop but I am sure that the drivetrain will require someone with experience in Studebakers and the parts availability.

What you have is a M series truck, either a 1941 or a 1946 - 1948. We can rule out it being a 1945 model as it does not have top mounted wipers or a swing out windshield.

If you provide us with the information off the data plate we can identify it for you. With a pickup bed it is either a 1/2 ton (M-5) or a 1 ton (M-15 or M-15A). Depending on the year, the data plate will be on the "A" pillar (where the door hinges but near the windshield) or below the drivers seat on the riser.

Update

Okay...here we are 4 years later. The plate says M5-13. Max gross weight 4500lbs. The plate is not on the pillar, it is riveted to the seat base.

No one here can tell you much more than that it is a 1/2 ton pickup with 113 inch wheelbase. If you're reluctant to reveal the serial number, that's understandable. If you supply that serial number to the Studebaker Museum, you can buy a copy of the original production order for the truck.........

are you still in NC or SC?
our local club (encsdc) took at tour of a shop here in wilmington a couple months ago that had some studes under "reconstuction". they do great work.
i'm sure there are others around that can give more local info once we know where you're located...
