  • Long time lurker, new studebaker owner

    Hi everyone,

I've been a studebaker fan for years, and, off and on for the last couple of decades a member of the SDC in the hopes that I would one day find a studebaker. Well, I finally found one and drug it home--a 53 Champion Deluxe Coupe--so I thought I'd finally stop lurking and say hi to everyone. I'll try not to become a pest with a bunch of newbie questions.

The car is stock, from San Diego so with the exception of a couple small spots is rust free. It runs--engine runs really well--but having set for years needs everything. It was recently sold on e-bay, but the high bidders flaked out on it, so I flew down, took a look and went ahead and bought it.

My initial plans for the car are to get it into shape for doing a rolling restoration. So I'll start off with a turner disc and dual m.c. conversion, and go through the rest of the mechanicals to get it safe to drive. Long range, I'm going to gut and replace the interior (upgrading it to regal), hopefully update the original drivetrain with some fancy Cathcart pieces and probably do a color change to a different original combination. I want to keep it so it can easily be returned to original. It will be a driver when I'm done.

It came with heater delete and no turn signals so one of my first tasks will be finding those. (this has to be the cheapest coupe ever built by studebaker--the only option I can find is overdrive, which, I suppose, if you're cheap it would make better gas mileage.)

That's my story--I thought it was time to stop lurking.

If you have the striped (kinda grayish… with a few maroon and turquoise stripes in it) fabric on your seats; I have a source for it. After waiting almost two years to get some additional made to finish filling my order, SMS finally got it done and sent to my upholsterer… they have quite a bit left and NO ONE ELSE HAS IT. I have owned my ’53 coupe since ’63 and hope to finally have it restored to stock and back on the road this summer….. For a few years it had a ’57 Golden Hawk mill in it.
I will not be able to make the Springfield meet but hope to have it at the Zone Meet in Ames, Iowa.
Welcome to 1953 coupe ownership... there are a lot of folks that want to own them; but only a few of us are lucky enough to actually have one!

For a car which was advertised as "The leader in the low cost field" there is a certain charm to the unadorned version of one of the pettiest cars ever built. Kind of like Sophia Loren without earring. You obviously have excellent taste.

thanks all--I'd re-joined sdc when the itch to get a stude returned again last year and just renewed my membership recently. Being a car guy I always got a lot out of turning wheels that applied to many things. And this forum is a great resource as well--just pulled one of my rear brake drums and it was a lot less challenging than it would've been thanks to tips on this board.

Question for the crowd--was the two spoke (with round red and black horn button) wheel common (or has someone else switched things around)? I've not seen one quite like it on this model before.

A 1953 Champion Deluxe coupe came standard with a two spoke steering wheel with a horn button (no horn ring).
1953 Regals came with a three spoke wheel and a horn ring. 1954 Deluxe came with a three spoke wheel and no horn ring.

I suggest that you get John Bridges' book "Studebaker's Finest".

I will also note that your interior door handle(s) has/have been positioned incorrectly. It/they would be difficult to use the way that it/they are. The handle should go nearly down, so as to fall easily to hand.

Thanks Gary, will do. And I was wondering why the handles seemed to work backwards.

Wow, thanks Duane. I'm not really sure what it had originally. There are bits of a goldish-colored striped fabric under the current vinyl seats, but I'm thinking that might be a recover as well--seems kind of 60's-ish. I've ordered the production order for it from the Museum--maybe that will let me know.

It may have took you a while to post, but you picked a great car even if it is a stripped down model. Some stripped down models look better than the more flashy models.
