  • Bottom of the scale...

I apologize. I have posted a question like this before...about three years ago, and I got quite a bit of response...but I cannot find the thread when I look up my previous posts. I had a freind of mine ask me what would be considered the least desirable studebaker built. I know that this is a matter of opinion, and one may think a particular model is lacking, while another sees that same model as the greatest thing since sliced bread. So, not to offend, but in order to get some general consensus on the matter: What do you consider to be the least desireable model/year/production run that Studebaker offered? It could be design, quality, style, whatever reason. I am not looking to start a fight or a contention, but just to gather opinions in the order of finding out what people think. A survey if you will. Please try not to get personal, and remember, what you may not like, others have poured their hearts and money into restoring, so be gentle. If you do have one that you find at the bottom of your list (and let me note, I am not saying that I want to to point out that it is a BAD car, just the one at the bottom of the scale...kinda like how I love Soda, but Dr Pepper is at the bottom of my list. I still like it, but i will get a pepsi before I buy a pepper. Does that make sense?) Anyhow, give the reasons why, not just because you don't desire it. Thanks!

BTW, if for some reason any moderator should see this as too much of a hot button or things get out of hand, by all means, it will not hurt my feelings if this thread were to get locked or removed. Again, not trying to stir the pot...

I have to agree with the 47-49 Champions, too. The front ends just turn me off.

It'd have to be a four-door Scotsman for me! Trust me, I'm aware of the number of folks out there who say Studebaker should have just skipped the '63 Lark, and I'm OK with that!

I just can't share this information. I am sure someone thinks mine is the one.

I really do like 'em all, because what any lack in sheer beauty, they more than make up for with personality and purpose!

Mention of the "first by far with the postwar car" '47-'49s really surprises me, though I certainly don't take issue with anyone's opinion.

I will choose, instead, to focus on my very least favorite design element - the quad sized headlight pods that feature a dual headlight configuration on the '58 Champions. All the added bulk with none of the benefit of quad lamps. At least the '58 Scotsman kept the cleaner contours of the '57s.

Runner up design flaw, IMHO, is the Champ fleetside pickup box - flush alignment with the cab would have made a tough truck look just a little more refined.

I think enough time has passed so that to most people, any Studebaker is a "cool old car". When driving my '58 4 door everyday, it got just as much attention and questions as my Granddad's '57 Hawk.

                        Personally, I like 'em all.

                            Quoted by PackardV8:

"Yes, sir, you definitely are. Question is, why?"

The answer to that question is stated in my post: A friend who is unfamiliar with studebakers asked "What is the most undesireable Studebaker?" Since I really have no idea what the general consensus is on what the bottom of the scale is, I thought I would post a survey, then take the total of each mention, tally them up, and then see if there is any general majority. Every Series has a scale from top to bottom in quality, style and design. Even if the scale is a minute one, there still is one. Every GM, Chrystler and Ford guy has at least one car from his brand he wouldn't touch with a 40 foot pole, and I figured the same would be true with the guys here. I am only trying to collect information, and short from sending everyone a PM asking which their least favorite Studebaker is, I figured we could respectfully post our opinions in a thread, knowing before hand that this is a matter of opinion, and no offense would be taken. I feel that we should be mature enough to handle that. I have no problem with anyone who thinks 63 4 drs are the bottom of the scale, it makes no difference to me whether I will drive it or not. This is meant to be a collection of data of the opinion of the members here, not a rant column on how much we dislike any certain type or style.

I hope this answers your question.

Also, for the record, I feel my least favorite is either the 52 sedans or the 55 sedans. They just look unappealing to me, and I hear that the quality of the chrome on the 55's is less than deirable. would I proudly drive either of those over any Brand X (other than a 71 riv) Absolutely! But they are at the bottom of my scale. I hope this helps as an example.

For me it would be the 53-55 sedans.
