BShaw,
What you have described is probably one of the more ideal things a person can do with their car. I had a bicycle back in college that I used to get around with. Well, I had to lock it in the rack at night. Course the lock was pretty hefty, but I didnt feel good about it. So I bought a Dremel Engraver, and "tattooed" my name, address, phone number and a special symbol that I could identify if the bicycle ever went missing. By doing this the bicycle not only became my personal property, but I could also identify either the symbol or the scratched off symbol if need be. Fortunately, I never had to resort having to do that. The thief would have to basically strip and repaint the bicycle, which would be alot of time, effort, and money wasted on a cheap simple bicycle from Walmart.
