OK, here's what's wrong, guys: The stamp says 100 Years of Racing.

This implies one of two things, both of which are wrong. Either:

1. There have been 100 Indianapolis 500 Mile Races as of the 2011 Race.

OR

2. The stamp commemorates The Indianapolis Motor Speedway celebrating 100 years of racing in 2011.

I understand what you're saying, but I think the stamp implies a 3rd thing, that this is the 100th year since the Indy 500's first race - which it is.

The stamp has "Indianapolis 500" and "100 years of racing" - nothing about how many other races may have been held at this track (earlier or not) and nothing about the 100th running of the 500. It's just commemorating the centennial of the 500 race no matter how many times it was run during that period. At least that's the way I read it.

I'm still curious about that direction thing.....

Craig, the USPS has decided to eliminate the denomination on first class postage stamps. They are all 'forever' stamps now. So if you buy one for 44 cents today, it's supposed to still work years from now when first class stamps are are lot higher.
They still sell 1 cent, 2 cent, 28 cent, etc.

Right, Skinny: You and I know the difference, but I'll bet you $100 that most of the people involved in that stamp's design and production would tell us 2011 will be the 100th running of the 500, since they "know" 1911 was the first running! I won't take that bet, because I would most likely lose! We'll see if the media covering the 500 can make it through the race weekend without calling it the 100th running.

(I wouldn't have had a clue either if it wasn't for a thread a couple months ago where you explained the dates and missed races at Indy - see, I was paying attention.)

The stamp is also an artist's rendition of a famous photo of the Marmon Wasp. Even in the photo the tires look oblong due to the camera's and film's limitations. I wonder why they didn't just colorize the photo.
