The ford starliner was a serious car, great power (406) and design. You could tell a starliner because it had these stars along the roof line. I must say this is the first time I have ever seen a studebaker full size car that was a hardtop. I never understood way the hawk k coupes were exports. In the U.S. hardtops were king in the 50's I wonder why they did not build more of these, It is a very hansome car. It's more attractive then a 1958 chevy or ford there best years were 55-57, ford did make a design comeback in 1959 using the t-bird roof line which the 1962 studebaker hawk took a liking to as well, the 58 Studebaker is nice car.

    Studebakers forever!

The Ford Starliner was made in '60 and '61. The 406 was used in '62 and '63 Ford and Mercurys. The biggest engine you could get in a (Ford) Starliner was a 390. Plenty of power still, however.

And Hawk K coupes were hardly limited to export![:I]

            Miscreant adrift in
            the BerStuda Triangle

            1957 Transtar 1/2ton
            1960 Larkvertible V8
            1958 Provincial wagon
            1953 Commander coupe

No deceptive flags to prove I'm patriotic - no biblical BS to impress - just ME and Studebakers - as it should be.

The Starliner is one of the very few Fords that would tempt me.

WE had a beautiful ford starliner with a 406 in it and it was a 61,I just looked at some old pic's. My father was a ford mechanic and we had some of the greatest fords in our area. No studebaker ever stood a chance aganst a ford of that era. They just did not have the torque. The little studebaker is a nice little car and all however they never had a big block they were not around long enough to develope one. If these k coupes were plentiful they would have been a hit however I have seen only one at the countless shows I have been to, that's why that hardtop is so surprizing just few and far between.

                    Studebakers forever!

                        All '56, '57 & '58 Golden Hawks were hardtops as well as '56 Sky Hawks and all '62, '63 & '64 Hawks.

The Ford Starliner reference brings back a memory. My best friend was working on the paint line at the Ford plant in Mahwah when the Starliners came out. When the first cars came down the line for paint, the paint crew was plugging the holes in the C-pillars with whatever they could find, like dum-dum. They never heard of there being intentional holes in the C-pillar. They learned about those stars on the C-pillar in short order.

I seem to remember Bob Bourke telling me that Studebaker did not keep up the protection of the Starliner name. Studebaker used it to refer to the hardtop model, but never put a Starliner nameplate on the car (AFAIR). I believe that Ford registered the Starliner name before the 1958 models came out.

I stewed on this one all day and finally made the trip to the dealership. I believe the 'picture' was worth 10,000 words but was very disappointed on closer inspection. A lot of detail work is needed. Didn't hear it run, the dealer thought it was out of gas. I believe he was selling it for someone and didn't know too much about the car.
