I've been wondering how many here actually met any of the last leaders of Studebaker. I wonder how many of their children or wives have been involved with SDC.
It wasn't exactly meeting him, but in 1963 I wrote to Sherwood Egbert with some suggestions for a two-door hardtop wagon. I was much surprised when I got a nice letter in return. He explained the market situation and thanked me for my input. I still have the letter.

Gordon Grundy's home was a Tudor style with the exposed beams on the exterior. There was a photo of it in with the story of it being razed.
If I get time I will search the archives of "The Hamilton Spectator"
to see what I can find

While not exactly in the context you have in mind, I, along with a number of Potomac Chapter and National Capital Area Avanti owners got to meet Raymond Loewy in 1975. The Smithsonian Renwick Gallery had a Raymond Loewy exhibition at which Raymond Loewy spoke about his designs. He signed my '53 brochure and my Avanti brochure. One member got him to autograph the glove compartment door of his '53 Commander Starliner. Raymond Loewy's gorgeous wife and daughter were there too. His daughter is still involved with Avantis.

              Paul,

Wasn't that Philip Ross from Silver Spring who had the autographed glove box? I remember the car coming down to a couple of shows at the Tutweiler brothers in the mid '70's.

Phil Ross - That is a name from the past. I think that it was in the 1980s when I last talked to him. I don't think that his health was well then. I wonder what happened to his low milage, original '53. Phil talked about leaving it to his "friend" that had no interest in Studebakers. Do any of you know the current status of Phil or his '53?

                      Gary,

I have not seen anything of him or the car since approximately 1977. I do recall he was always very close to the vest about where the car came from and what he paid, in fact, I once overheard him say that part of the deal when he got the car was not to disclose the price.

Perhaps Paul Johnson or someone else in the Potomac Chapter can shed some light on this.

I was fortunate to meet both Walt Moeller and Roy Bender(former president of SASCO,and at the time Vice Presedent and consultant to SASCO) at Homecoming '68 SDC's 4th national meet at South Bend. Moeller seemed a nice enough guy, but Mr Bender was my favorite. He was a very personable gentleman and, as you can imagine, quite interesting to talk to given his tenure(october 1939 - november 1968) with Studebaker.

                              Hi guys,
when I left Canada aged 29 after 3.5 years of drinking and partying in 1993 like any Australian would do, I shipped my 1963 Supercharged Avanti off to the UK to take on European 4 month vacation. The aim was to go Toronto - Turkey. We I did not quite make Turkey but did meet a girl in Eastern France, who convinced me to visit her in Zurich.

I did get as far as Northern Italy. On my return to the UK in the Avanti I did go to pick her up at Heathrow airport. Unfortunately I was a little late, because I went to the wrong pick up area in the large terminal. Anyway, some English bloke approached me and mentioned that it was nice to see an Avanti.

I asked him how did he know it was a Studebaker as most English people have a problem with anything American. He replied, that his name was Patrick Farrell and he was Chairman and managing Director of Raymond Lowey and associates. He invited me to the Lowey Studio in London a few days later to show a few of the designers the car. Patrick explained that he was working in the New York RL office at the time of the Avanti project. One of the chaps working in the London office was a French designer who looked after Raymonds Paris Avanti. The Paris office had a 63 R2 and an Avanti II. Lowey also had a 63 R2 Avanti at the NY office.
Patrick gave me a book on Raymond Lowey and I gave him some Avanti owners association magazines.

On my way back through the US I mentioned to a club member that I had a 64 R1 Avanti back in Australia that was real late production, with Avanti maroon and black interior. The real odd thing was that my car had a black steering wheel on it, instead of the woodgrain one, which looked to be original. Whoever I was speaking too, mentioned that Bob Doeler (interior designer for 64 Avanti) had just passed away and that on his wall was a new black steering wheel. I did get his brother Gerhard's phone number and managed to get that black steering wheel shipped to Australia.

So I have not met the influential people, but have crossed paths by accident and fortuitously with those in and around a few big guns.

                              Regards
                              Greg Diffen

However I would love to have met and worked directly for Sherwood Egbert. The dynamics would have been amazing
