  • stiffen seat springs

I am starting to redo the seats and the existing coil springs compress too much resulting in sinking down excessivley. I will add some foam rubber across the top but this wont really help stiffen the springs. Has anyone some ideas on what can be done to stiffen this coindition.

    thanks

A few days ago, while looking for other things, I ran across a website that offered replacement coils. I am sure that if I could find it by accident, you can on purpose. They are available.

I have heard that sometimes to strengthen the springs you can connect them to each other, in different directions but in a symmetrical way and then add the additional cushioning. (Never tried this.)

I was told that the springs need to be tied to one another...they will work with each other to form a more rigid foundation....they won't be able to shift or drop...they will hold together at the same height...if they pitch from side to side, they, again, will move together...extra foam or padding will not take the place of weak springs....

The guy that done my 48 seats wrapped the coils in burlap and tied them together. They turned out real good.

Studebaker listed "add on seat springs" as an accessory at one time.

OK, it took a little searching but I found the site that had the replacement springs.

Give it a little time to load and go to page 46. I hope this helps.

A quick, simple, and so far permanent fix is to put a piece of foam inside each coil. I did this on the truck 10 years ago, the seat is still firm and comfy, and look perfect. I also reinforced only one row of coils in the seat back for lumbar support. In mine the location was perfect, your results may vary!

                    You are correct Matthew.

I've got some of these, AC 1625, listed for '48 thru '53 Champion and Commander. Still in the box, with instructions. Instructions seem to indicate a 'set' is six coils, but this box only has four.

There are usually a couple layers of pad above the coils. It would be possible to sandwich a layer of thin stiff carpet (indoor/outdoor) under either layer, distributing weight across more coils.
