  • Hood Spring Picture for Studeclunker

I don't even have to pull forward on the hood just lift straight up. I know I am missing a hood spring but it is on there now. The green is actually darker than that. It must be the lights.

Are you suggesting we chuck our rear springs?

His point, John, is that we were discussing these in the Technical forum and I haven't been around much the last few days.

thanks Carl. Trouble is, I don't have those nice clips that show on your cross bar. So, I'll have to figure out how to mount the springs on that end. Should I do it CASO style or actually find the real deal? Like I said, not one of my vehicles have these, not even any remanants. I would guess they've been gone for decades.

        thanks for posting the picture.

Yes, thanks! I think I see what you guys are talking about, and I'm going to remember this.

By the way, that green is gorgeous!!

Are you telling me moving the spring over an inch or two is going to change the way the hood opens?
I just found the other thread, now it begins to make sense. I'll have to give that a try mine are hooked to hinge. Thanks

Ron the springs I bought had a real sharp bend on one end that was supose to hook to the torsion bar. I took 2 fuel line clamps that screw into the frame and put them on the torsion bar. It opens easy and closes easy so I will just leave it.

OOOOOOOhhhh... what a great idea, very clever! Well, that's what parts cars are for.

John, no... there are four springs that assist in the opening of the hood. Two are attached to the tension hinge, one on each side, and pass through the back of the fenders to a loupe, or eye, on the firewall. Then the pictured spring (one on each side) attach to the cross bar and hook into holes provided in the inner fender. I was wondering how any cars survived without getting the hood bent up. It's because none of mine were complete. The springs (both types) are ten Dollars each from S.I. (284505P firewall, and 308907P engine compartment) and they offer a set (770530) for thirty-two-fifty.

Thanks, I do have the 4 springs tho, it's just that the above springs are hooked to hinge as well not the cross bar. I would assume the PO didn't know quite hwere they went and guessed????

I was looking thru my shop manual to adjust my hood hinges (53 coupe) and i noticed in the picture on first page of body section that this spring is hooked to the hinge, ( as is my car) not the cross bar. I'm curious as to where you got the info to hook to cross bar? Can anyone shed any light on this?
