Latest Studebaker toy on market 7/25/10

The new 1951 Johnny Lightning 1:24scale 1951 Studebakers have started showing up at retailers in the Springfield, MO area this wekend.
The car is black with grey interior. This is the fifth version of this car. JL had 4 others a few years ago; green, maroon, red with Coca Cola graphics and a yellow one with Coca Cola markings.
The hood opens and has a V8 engine.
The model has a crest like a 1950's model Champion on the hood instead of the V8 emblem.
Neat model. I bought two this weekend for $15.00 each. Look for them where ever fine toys are sold.

They never showed up in stores years ago around here.
I think there was a chase one on ebay a while back that had red tires on it.

Funny this crops up now; in between an SDC chapter event and a cruise night in the Lark yesterday, I stopped at a Wally-World to pick up batteries and a datacard for my camera...and there were two of these 1:24 JL '51 Starlights. Bought one immediately of course; it fills a huge gap in my collection, I've got bulletnoses in 1:18, 1:43 and 1:64 but until now none in 1:24/25. I always check the diecasts in any of the big discount stores...never know what's going to turn up. (Incidentally I found the 1:64-or-so '53 Starliner kustom in overall candy-apple red recently in a Zellers. Still watching for more of that version.)

Eventually I'll get pix up from the very enjoyable SDC event yesterday; nice lineup of ten Studes at an alpaca farm!

I was looking for some more info on these and on a diecast board someone mentioned that on the M2 blog they have some pictures of the back of the two trucks

thanks for pointing that out, looks like it might have a R1 air cleaner. It think it's actually be a 56 champion.
I just noticed there's a car with a paxton blown Stude motor 8 pictures above it too.

For some reason, that car looks really familiar. I think there was a thread posted about it here a while back. Really nice car.

Went out on the hunt for one of these tonight. I couldnt find one anywhere locally and have actually never found more than a handful of Johnny Lightnings locally. I did find 2 previously released Stude toys that I didnt have yet. Also I think that 56 pictured on the M2Machines site belongs to a forum member. There were pics of the buildup on here previously. Does anyone remember who it was or does its owner still hang out here? Steve

Have searched high and low for the pretty Johnny Lightning bullet noses in Murfreesboro. Only one 1:24 car at Toys R Us and not the Stude. Dang! Which stores besides Walmart are you finding them at?
