It would be easier to toss the engine/gearbox like your buddies suggest, but you and Sandi will have an "authentic" vehicle, SBC's are common, Studebaker engines not so in the general scheme of things.

Brian, what's to search for? The engine parts you need are available from Studebaker International and our other vendors. Oi
, you want a Chevy engine, buy a Camaro!
Just kidding... well, sort of. Still, the parts for your motor are available. Just not at the local FLAPS.
Tell your friends to stuff it, or better yet just smile and nod right now. Then when the engine is done (and of course re-broken in) stomp them with it later.
Now's a good time to upgrade the motor to a higher grade, such as an R1, add a SuperCharger and really have fun with it.

Thanks Ron
Just trying to save some money here! Sandi says she has none, so I guess I must foot the bill??? But I do know that she will not be happy if she can not just turn the key and go.....and never having any experience with a Stude motor & trans, I am not willing to offer any guaranties.
On the other hand I have over 60,000 miles on my Stude shop truck with not a missed beat!! SBC c/w 700R4.
Not to say this could be a fun adventure into the past?
Good Roads
Brian
PS Sandi's Stude wil now be known as "Stella" Since everyone seems to have a name for their Studebaker. I personally don't know if it was Mr Bigg's video on "Pete" that sinched the deal or what??

I'd keep the stude engine for sure! My car has never given me a problem starting, except for 2 times. 1: when I killed the battery; and 2: when it was so cold outside, the gas line froze.......Dylan Wills

Brian, once Stella (Italian for Star) gets a couple of hundred miles on her, all should be fine. It took about that before my Lark stopped stalling at the lights, now she's fine and I'm getting a 4BBL Manifold with Carter WCFB Carburettor installed and should still get 22-25MPG so I'm told. Loved the photos, but maybe you should wear eye protection when sanding?
Best of luck with Stella.
PS Had my gearbox serviced and apart from firming up the shiftpoints and new fluid I was told no rebuild was necessary.John Clements

Hey Brian...is the name of the shop Woodysrods....or Woodysrestorations...be a man and stuff a new style 392 HEMI in that Hawk. Wouldn't it be nice to have the coin to do that? Why is it always the better half that talks sense...just turn the key and go...what kind of fun is that? My wife (her nick name is Stella) always insists that her cars remain stock...NO mods allowed(except de-badging)not even a cat-back exhaust system, she just wants to drive in peace...bottom line is stock makes sense even if it means less fun. Is there anything wrong with the Hawks engine? Why not check it out and just seal it back up with new gaskets, throw it a pointless ignition and rebuilt carb, new wires, paint and detailing and be done with it? Talking about Hawks, has your's taken a back seat to Sandi's until her's is done, or are you muti-tasking? Later...Junior.Originally posted by woodysrods View PostI do know that she will not be happy if she can not just turn the key and go.....and never having any experience with a Stude motor & trans, I am not willing to offer any guaranties.sigpic

Good to hear from you Junior. Thought I might catch you on line this morning, but you get up earlier than I do. Time zone thing? You have hit the nail on the head again. An yes my car has taken a bit of a backseat to Sandi's, but I am still looking at it in the shop every day. Thinking about getting crazy again......Chopping the top???? Got the reverse opening hood stuff for it two weeks agao. Getting ready to Sandblast this morning so got to go. Keep in touch.

Thanks RichOriginally posted by StudeRich View PostOr, you could come 10 miles South of the Border and pick up all the Parts you need here!
Wish I had the motor disassembled aweek earlier. As I saw lots of thing in your stall in Bellingham, but I wasn't sure of what I neeeded at that point. ie motor mounts, trans mounts, etc. etc. I will be making a list and giving you a chance to quoat some prices.
Thanks
Brian

'Stella" is a beautiful name for a Stude with a girlie look. I sold my Stella at the International Meet in Charlotte, NC a few years ago and I sure do miss her. I think it was Ohio that she went to. Hi Brian, and belated "Happy Birthday" wishes for your wife. I say stay with the Studebaker engine, if you want reliability, buy new, if you want fun,
and resale value, such as it is, keep it as close to original as possible. I've never had an unexpected breakdown driving a Studebaker. And if Sandi
happened to be a gearhead, she could do all her own maintenance.
