  • I suspect at one time my 58 Scotsman was an oil burner or leaker

I found this in the cab corner, very high quality compared to the tin ones i've seen. Cast aluminum, and came from St Louis, same as the truck.

Not necessarily a leaker or burner. Both of my parent's cars had an oil spout, a funnel, and other items stored in the spare tire well (stationwagon) and behind the seat (pickup). These were to enable my father in doing whatever maintenance was necessary, should it be so. Kind of a just in case type thing. None of these things were often used as if the wagon or truck needed oil, it was usually supplied by the Gas-Station attendant.

Hey, here's a memory tweaker for you; how many people here remember going into a waiting room whilst they filled and serviced the car? Back in the days, that is, when Service Stations provided service?

Courtesy of the old St. Louis Directories:

1958 listing reads: "Hutchins & Co. Manufacturing and Sales Office of Automobile Accessories, Trim, Chrome & Novelty Items. 6331 Theodosia Avenue, Wellston, MO 20, Telephone Evergreen 2-0588. 8-5 Monday-Friday"

First listed in 1953, moved to St. Charles, MO in 1964, and last listed in 1969 still in St. Charles.

Bring the spout to Springfield next summer and see if John Anderson, the man who restored your truck 25 years ago, remembers it.
