  • The New Ride is home!!

Left Tuesday morning (5/18) to pick up the '64 Avanti I bought on eBay. Wednesday- leaving Olive Branch, Mississippi after loading-

Thursday evening, 1700 round trip miles, $353 in gas, we arrived home.

This R5527, a very late '64 R-1 with much equipment- Avanti Gray with a Claret interior (near mint), 71,000 miles, Powershift, Turner brakes, power steering, 3.54 TT, A/C, tilt, AM-FM w/ rear speaker, power windows, full tint glass, w/s washer. Even has a 6.70x15 Firestone 500 spare (may be original)-

It was pretty honestly described, but there were some additional "warts" that I have discovered- hand brake cables stuck, right exhaust manifold either cracked or blown out a gasket, heat riser stuck, patch on drivers windshield post where a spotlight had been mounted, bad valve guide seals (I hope). However, the real shocker was when I was parking the car after backing off the trailer. I noticed the oil pressure went to zero momentarily a couple times. I shut it off and checked the oil- nothing on the dipstick. I pulled the car up on ramps and drained the oil after decidiing to go ahead and change the oil and filter. Here is the total volumne of oil I drained (including draining the oil filter)- just over two quarts.

After filling with five quarts plus filling the filter before installing, everything seemed normal. The wife even drove it briefly and pronounced it nice- really liked the Turner brakes.
The previous owner did quite a lot to the car including installing a nice stereo very unobtrusively in the glove box (I had to get my son to show me how it works- too high tech for me).

Looks great! Hopefully the lack of and assumed use of oil is nothing too serious. Good Luck, Steve

I'm concerned being that it only had two quarts of oil in it. Where did the existing oil go? I'm also concerned about the driver of this great looking car, being that I don't see any signs of a burnout on your driveway.

Paul: I'd say there's a good chance that is an original 6.70X15 Firestone 500 in the trunk.

It has the straight edges at the very sides of the tread, not the wrap-around edge that was phased in around 1966. I was working at a gas station that sold Firestones in that era and remember getting a set for my Tahiti Coral '59 Lark hardtop (Power Pack 259 / Flightomatic) I was driving at the time. They were 1966 or 1967 production and already had the wrap-around edge, unlike the tire in your photo.

You might also examine the rim itself carefully, to see if there are any scratches or chipped paint that inevitably resuilt when a tire is mounted after production.

'Glad to hear of your successful mission. Did you sell the '64 convertible, or is it going on e-bay or?? BP

Love the Avanti Gray. Late production car with a rare color combo...nice car and the wheel and tire combo looks great. I have those wheels on my El Camino, definitely one of my favorites.

Take pictures of the inside the glove box stereo some time and post them .... Not sure I want to remove the vanity tray but wouldn't mind seeing what this looks like. Very nice car and welcome to the Avanti disease ..... it is not curable !!!

Want to move to West Virginia? We would like to downsize- too much for us old folks. House is 1830/1870 vintage, about 2700 sq ft, shop with attached six stall equipment shed (aka garage), chicken house converted to craft building, 1870 bank barn 40' x 70'- holds 10 or 12 cars if it is cleaned out, six acres- large gardens, fruit trees, nut trees, great mountain view...

I emailed the seller and he was a bit shocked too. Turns out he had a mechanic change the oil pan gasket in his garage and he hadn't driven it since. Apparently the guy didn't finish adding oil when he was done. As it turns out, it only got driven a couple hundred yards before I loaded it.
Black marks- actuallly I did romp on it hard enough to leave twin black marks about four feet long (didn't want to have to explain them to the wife or they would be longer).

I think it's an original too. I have a couple NOS Firestone Champion 6.70s and they look the same. It has been on the ground, but doesn't show much use. I'll check the rim for those marks.
Convertible will go on eBay. I was watching the silver one that closed without making reserve. Makes me a little nervous.

Will do. Actually I have had the disease for a long time- first Avanti in '69, a transition model R-1 four-speed, a/c, power windows. Have owned a bunch since- previous one was a late '64 maroon R-2 with tilt and AM-FM. It had been wrecked and was never right so I got rid of it.
