  • My Classic Car TV, Hemmings, Newport Hill Climb

I just received my annual entry forms for the Newport Hill Climb for September 30 and October 1. Part of the info stated that Dennis Gage and crew would be there on Saturday for filming for "MY CLASSIC CAR" on Speed TV. ( He picked a dumb day as the big car show and the hill competition will be Sunday.[xx(])

The July 06 issue of Hemmings Motor News had a nice story "Hoosier Hill Happiness" on last year's Newport event with some color pictures. There was even a Studebaker shown, albeit a very long range shot. It was Wayne Remaly climbing the hill in his 1938 President. Probably nobody but Wayne would have quickly spotted it as the picture was small but hey, Wayne and his Studebaker made a national publication.

Those that consider the Newport Hill Climb stickers an eyesore should kindly remember that they are badges of honor to the owners and represent their effort to promote the cars.

If you are "near" middle Indiana/Illinois you might consider the event-- Unfortunately, it is at the end of Omaha International week. So that has to be factored in. The Studebaker representation at the event has grown each year but the clash of schedules may cause a bit of a drop in Stude participation this year. Hemmings lists the attendance at 150,000 but don't let that dissuade you as it has a mannerly and family atmosphere.

Studebakers made in 1955 or earlier may compete in the Hill Climb.
There is a class for everyone and the points system will make your Studebaker competitive.
All Studebakers are eligible for the show event but you need to enter and arrive early as the town can only hold so many cars.
If you get interested [u]www.newporthillclimb.com</u> will have the rules, entry forms, schedule, fees, etc.

I will be there again this year with our 51 comander for the 5th year. We are going to the nationals and driving the Stude on friday back to Newport and run the hill. It is really a lot of fun and my wife likes to ride with me. See you there.

If you have never been to this hill climb, you really ought to try to make it sometime. Quite a few Studes and unbelievable the number of cars and people that show up.

If you really want a thrill you should have Lark take you up the hill in his Stude! When you pop up over the top of the hill ? 80mph ? but seems like 180 and you see you have to chock it down QUICK and make a right hand turn it's quite a thrill.

Lark, see if Dennis Gage will ride with you once. Might curl his mustache the other way!

Yep; The Newport Hill Climb is one event no enthusiast should miss. 'Hard to describe the comaraderie and downright old-fashioned, low-stress FUN this annual event generates. My brother has occasion to examine municipal services around the state of Indiana. He reports Newport being the only County Seat in Indiana without a central water & sewer system...septic tanks (or ???) throughout! [:0] Now if that isn't "down home," I don't know what is. Time hasn't passed by Newport IN, but it sure slowed down when it got there!

This year will be an unusually good opportunity for SDC members from east of Indiana to attend Newport. If you are heading back east from Omaha after the SDC National Meet, going through Indiana, schedule your return trip to take in Newport on your way home from Omaha. You'll not regret it.

As Dale indicated, The 2006 Newport Hill Climb is THE Sunday (October 1, 2006) immediately after the SDC International Meet ends. It's almost 550 miles due east from Omaha to Newport, but all except the last 17 miles are on Interstate highways. Even the final 17 miles, on Indiana 63 going south from I-74, are on a wide, 4-lane divided highway all the way to Newport. PLENTY of easy parking [:I] at Newport if you are towing a trailer on your way home from The SDC Nats.

Arrive at Newport as early as possible that day; [8D] final competition begins at 11:00AM, but there is lots to see and do, and a huge car show, associated with the event right on the premises. Watching the old cars "run the hill" [] is a great diversion from the customary "Sit/Roast/BS" stationary car show. Studebakers are always well represented, thanks in no small part to Dale "Lark Parker" McPhearson's efforts through the years. It's not unusual to see upwards of 50 Studebakers -or more- on the premises, including those in the Car Show and parking lot, as well as those in the Hill Climb competition. [8D] BP

One other thing that is nice is that a section of the town is arts & crafts which make the ladys happy.
